At 11:11 yesterday morning, a weary United States senator stepped into a Capitol Hill hallway lined with reporters and confirmed just how dangerous this moment has become. John Cornyn, the senator Trump recently rejected for not being loyal enough, had just voted to advance Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general, and when the cameras turned to him, he admitted, “There’s nothing we could do to rein in the president.” He didn’t say they chose not to. He said there was nothing they could do. One of 100 people elected specifically as a check on executive power told the American people they were powerless. Except it simply wasn’t true. Minutes earlier, he had been handed a near-perfect chance to stop it. If Cornyn or fellow Republican Thom Tillis had voted no, Blanche’s nomination would have died in committee. That’s all it would have taken.
Both men had nothing to lose. Cornyn already lost his primary after Trump endorsed his opponent. Tillis chose not to run again. They were two of the freest men in the Senate, with no reelection to worry about and no base to appease, and they still could not bring themselves to say no. Tillis even admitted during the meeting, “Nobody is clean here,” and then voted yes anyway. This is Todd Blanche, Trump’s personal defense attorney during the trial that ended in 34 felony convictions, who, as acting attorney general, has fired more than 200 prosecutors who worked on Trump cases, moved to vacate the convictions of January 6 leaders, indicted James Comey over an Instagram post, and said that if Trump replaced him, he would respond, “Thank you very much. I love you, sir.” More than 1,200 former DOJ officials from 14 administrations wrote to oppose him, saying his guiding star is “fealty to the President, not the Constitution.”
But history offers a warning that every Republican in Congress should be hearing. There is a pattern with Trump and his lawyers, and it never ends well for the lawyers. Michael Cohen went to prison and was disbarred. Rudy Giuliani was disbarred, found liable for $148 million, and declared bankruptcy. John Eastman, Sidney Powell, Jenna Ellis, and Kenneth Chesebro all either disbarred, convicted, or both. Blanche is walking the exact same path, either too deep to see it or believing he will be the one Trump spares. No one ever is. When the tide turns, and it will, the American people will hold every enabler accountable, and they will scramble to rewrite their own histories. This was their moment, and they let it pass. But there is a way we rein in the president even when those elected to do so refuse. We show them with our votes in November.
