At 10:37 p.m., after spending most of Election Day hidden inside the White House, Donald Trump started lashing out at the country that had just rejected him. He insisted that if he had been on the ballot, Republicans would have won “IN A LANDSLIDE!” An hour later, he posted a picture of a red hat with one word across it: “VETO.” His slogan went from “Make America Great Again” to a reminder of the power he still holds. The American people voted to flip both the House and the Senate, and the president who believed himself invincible was left attacking Fox News polls “BULLSHIT,” and accusing the network of funding Democrats. He asked us to pretend he was on the ballot, and we did. He wanted this election to be about him, and he got his wish.
This moment does not belong to Donald Trump. It belongs to every one of us who refused to give up, and to the Black and brown communities whose turnout may have saved this country. Black voters cast more than 160,000 additional early ballots compared with the same point in the 2022 midterms. These communities saw the ICE raids, the attacks on civil rights, the racism, and the redistricting meant to silence them. They organized, brought their neighbors, stood in line, and made themselves heard. Two years ago, we did not know whether our resistance would make a difference or how much we would lose along the way. We knew only that silence was more expensive than speaking out. Now, after all the exhaustion and heartbreak, we have proof that our votes can take power back.
I also want to thank those outside the United States who never gave up on us, who held the light when we struggled to believe in our own country. The America that stands beside its allies and believes in human rights is still here. We will keep fighting to earn back your trust and make the changes needed to prevent this from happening again. Victory is not the same as safety. Trump and his enablers remain in power until January, and we still face two more years of his presidency. We should expect more attacks on the media, more lawsuits, and more lies from a man who has never accepted defeat. Accountability must reach not only Trump, but his cabinet, Elon Musk, and everyone who enabled this assault on our country. Tonight we celebrate the people who protested, organized, donated, and voted. Tomorrow we begin the next chapter, knowing that we are more powerful than he ever wanted us to believe when we stand together.
