At 7:57 in Daytona Beach, Donald Trump grabbed the handrails and hoisted himself onto the stage, then eventually told the audience how he really felt about campaigning for his fellow Republicans. “28 days in a row of this crap is a lot,” he said. This came after he canceled his weekend rallies, then added both back on Sunday, leaving Saturday open for golf. What followed was another evening of national embarrassment, including bizarre assurances that he had never married or proposed to his sisters, repeated interruptions from protesters, and the president barking, “Shut up, loser.” These rallies used to be his sanctuary, the place where he could keep the illusion of power intact. Now even his most loyal crowds cannot shield him from the resistance growing around him. Some Republicans privately welcomed the cancellations because they feared he would hurt their candidates, while he insisted people had begged him to come back. They know they are in trouble, and their desperation is making this moment more dangerous.
Trump also repeated his promise to send every adult citizen $5,000 if Republicans win the House and Senate, warning that a Democratic victory would bring a 1929-style depression instead. He cannot unilaterally send those checks. If the country is generating all the wealth he claims, why does the deficit keep increasing? The promise is a bribe for votes, another addition to the stack of promises he never keeps. The checks are only part of the story. MS NOW reported that some FBI agents fear they could be ordered to seize voting machines or take other actions that disrupt election results, with current and former officials worried about warrants based on thin allegations. We have already seen ballots seized in Fulton County under a warrant tied to debunked fraud claims. Meanwhile, Pete Hoekstra suggested Canada could be blamed for Republican losses, and Peter Navarro threatened the country over alleged interference. They are preparing their excuse before Election Day, seeding another stolen-election myth while their path to holding Congress slips away.
If you have not voted, please make it your priority. Return an outstanding mail ballot to a drop box or your county elections office, and see whether early voting is available this weekend. Right now, showing up matters most. Hungary, Serbia, and Brazil remind us that authoritarian leaders do not stay in power by some immutable law of nature. People who refuse to give up can defeat them. We have four days to turn our resistance into consequences at the ballot box.
