At 7:15 last night in Perry, Georgia, Donald Trump stood before his most devoted supporters and tried to sell them a story that should offend anyone struggling to pay their bills. Oil companies were making enormous profits, he said, because of what was happening in the Middle East. To him, that meant our country was doing wonderfully. But a company making a fortune is not the same thing as a family being able to afford gasoline, groceries, or rent. According to Trump himself, his own advisers warned him not to brag while people were paying more at the pump. He understood exactly how it would sound. He even supplied the headline about Americans suffering, then said he did not give a damn and was going to say it anyway. This was not someone failing to notice the difference between corporate profits and household hardship. He acknowledged it and kept boasting.
What came later in the speech disturbed me even more. Trump acted out an imaginary call from Jon Ossoff asking for money for Georgia and told the audience he would refuse to take it. The people who would suffer if a president withheld help are not just politicians he dislikes. They are the roughly eleven million people who live in Georgia, pay their taxes, and may need their government when the next hurricane hits. That money has never belonged to him. His remarks about the National Guard, his talk of Cuba, and his willingness to treat presidential power as something personal leave me thinking about what comes after November 3. I worry about what he might do if Democrats win Congress, and I remember Mike Johnson’s refusal to seat Adelita Grijalva for 50 days. I also worry about what two more years without congressional accountability could bring.
While Trump was speaking in Georgia, Barack Obama was in Detroit reminding people that they can say enough is enough. He asked them to find people who might not otherwise vote and help them make a plan. That is something each of us can do over the next ten days. Trump told Georgians he did not care what their senator wanted. On November 3, we get to show how much we care about one another.
