At 6:58 pm, Donald Trump made his way across a stage in Wichita, Kansas, after a video explaining all the reasons that “God made Trump,” including his friendships with authoritarian leaders and his willingness to attack the press. Then came an hour and 37 minutes of some of the most racist and un-American rhetoric our country has ever seen. He complained that nobody appreciates him, threatened Canada again, and tried to turn French protests into a story about migrants destroying Western civilization. He attacked Ilhan Omar and Maxine Waters and kept telling Americans who they should hate. But protesters continuously interrupted him. They walked into a room filled with his most radicalized followers and refused to let him say these things unchallenged. As one nonviolent older gentleman was being escorted out, a man in the stands hit him while the crowd chanted “USA! USA!”
Every time he says something deplorable about immigrants, I think about the people who cared for me during emergency surgery in the spring of 2020. My husband had to leave me at the emergency department door, not knowing whether I would survive, and nobody from my family could stay. A Vietnamese nurse gently helped me start walking. A Hispanic nurse washed and braided my hair after hearing how much I wanted to feel normal again. A Black nurse promised to stay beside me through surgery and afterward. Another nurse, with a thick European accent, spent her break and her own money buying me a better cup of coffee. I wasn’t thinking about where they or their ancestors came from. I was thinking about how lucky I was to have them. Those are the people Trump wants us to look at and see as a threat instead of a fellow human being. And when people stand up to him, he wants them discredited as paid protesters who will ruin their lives by speaking.
He also told us he would love to sue the media and went after the protection established by New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, which allows us to criticize powerful public officials without being financially destroyed by lawsuits when they cannot prove actual malice. As someone who writes about his corruption every single day, I take that threat seriously. Every time he attacks the First Amendment, I launch my economic protest: get louder, defend our neighbors, and support the independent writers, journalists, podcasters, and outlets he wants to silence. I have written every night for a year and a half without corporate backing or sponsorship money, keeping every post free because the truth should never be behind a paywall. Community support makes that possible, and other independent voices need that support too. Voting and putting our money where our voices are remain direct forms of resistance.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.
Thank you for your continued support. Your paid subscriptions have enabled me to add a video editor and reach more people.
Independent media is under attack. You can make a difference with a $5/month paid subscription. Your support allows me to keep telling the truth about the lies and destruction unfolding in our country, defend myself from constant pressure from MAGA extremists, and ultimately spread the message to more people.
I’m fighting to save our country (before it’s too late).
I’ll see you tomorrow,
Heather
