At 3:29 this afternoon, Donald Trump arrived on a stage in Port Huron, Michigan, and spent the next hour and 48 minutes showing us how far he is willing to go to turn Americans against one another. He called Abdul El-Sayed, a doctor born in metro Detroit, a jihadist and attacked his family and Muslim faith. The Associated Press reported that there is no evidence connecting El-Sayed to the Muslim Brotherhood, but that did not stop the President of the United States from repeating the accusation. Then he told Jewish Americans who support El-Sayed that they should be ashamed of themselves. With nine days until the midterms, and so many families worried about health care, housing, and the cost of living, he offered them someone to fear.
He brought the father of a September 11 hero onto the stage, and what happened next was even more painful to watch. David Beamer told the crowd that El-Sayed has a birth certificate, but that a birth certificate doesn’t make him an American. Donald Trump stood behind him and let those words hang over thousands of people. I will always honor Todd Beamer’s courage aboard Flight 93, and I cannot imagine the grief his family carries. But compassion does not require us to excuse a political attack that treats our own neighbors as enemies. We have seen what happens when those in power decide that citizenship under the law is not enough. We saw it in Germany, and we saw it here when Japanese Americans were forced from their homes and sent to internment camps. I remember reading Farewell to Manzanar in school and wondering how anyone could have allowed that to happen.
Even some of the people who helped Trump win Michigan are speaking out. Bishara Bahbah, a founder of Arab Americans for Trump, called his remarks racist, while El-Sayed told supporters that Trump could call him senator after November. Beyond our borders, ordinary people are reminding us that leaders who rule through fear can be defeated. Hungary voted out Viktor Orbán in April. Brazil chose Lula over Flávio Bolsonaro, and a student-backed movement in Serbia defeated Aleksandar Vučić after nearly two years of protests. Trump is already warning about Detroit’s vote counters and encouraging Americans to distrust the coming election. We do not have to accept the future he is trying to sell us. In nine days, we have our own chance to show what people can do when they refuse to give up on each other.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.
