At 3:37 this afternoon, Donald Trump stood in front of his most devoted followers in Iowa and began a nearly two-hour speech in which he slurred his words, struggled to keep his eyes open, and assured everyone that he could have won the Vietnam War in one week. He claimed we had acquired Greenland for “zero dollars” and insisted, “This isn’t rambling. This is genius.” Then he spent several minutes talking about Flagpole Jim and acted out a fake weightlifting competition, complete with strange arm movements and a mother’s voice. This was the President of the United States, two days before an election that will determine our country’s future. Watching it is disturbing enough. But underneath it all, Trump and his enablers are laying the groundwork for the Big Lie 2.0.
Before the rally, Trump was asked about ballot counts changing overnight, the way they normally do. He answered with the same lie he told in 2020: “We won the race. They rigged it.” He is preparing his supporters to believe that any shift as votes are counted means another stolen election. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Stephen Miller, Russell Vought, and White House Counsel Will Scharf have been working since April on ways to push his agenda through without congressional approval. Executive actions, preparations for subpoenas, and an executive-privilege opinion are all part of it. Publicly, he insists Republicans will win in a landslide. Privately, his White House has spent seven months preparing for the possibility that they lose. They are building the lie in public and the workaround in private. Trump believes he is bigger than the election. He learned from 2020. We need to ask ourselves whether we did, too.
Yesterday also brought news that Senator Chris Murphy suffered a stroke. His office says he is awake and alert, and his doctors are encouraged by his progress. We do not know what caused it. Our job is to carry his mission onward while he recovers, just as we carry everyone who needs to step back. Movements don’t collapse when one person falls. They absorb the weight and keep going. More than 53 million Americans have already voted, surpassing the 2022 early voting total, with records falling in state after state. We have one day left. If you haven’t voted, please do so and take someone with you. We vote for the people whose voices cannot be heard, and we keep working until we take back Congress.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.
