Donald Trump was supposed to spend the weekend at Camp David. Instead, barely 24 hours after arriving, he abruptly returned to Washington. I’m not going to pretend we know what caused that sudden change, but the uncertainty comes as the Middle East grows more dangerous. Houthi rebels launched a ballistic missile toward Riyadh that was said to have been intercepted, claimed strikes on sensitive sites and oil facilities, and the State Department warned Americans that the conflict could escalate rapidly. Trump keeps telling us his war is almost over. What we are watching offers no reassurance that he knows how to bring it to an end.
This is what happens when a president treats military force as a substitute for diplomacy and imagines that starting a war is the same as controlling one. Negotiations come and go without a lasting resolution, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is being choked, and countries that once counted on America are building relationships that leave us out. Another scene in Washington reminded me that the people of this country are still capable of protecting what matters. Last night, thousands surrounded the Kennedy Center, singing, carrying signs, and joining hands in a human chain after Trump was seen looking at plans depicting its demolition. Lynda Carter spoke, musicians played, and strangers held on to one another. I watched from a hospital room and felt comfort in seeing people show up before something irreplaceable was lost.
That was our third and final night in the hospital. He is in good spirits and appears to be out of acute danger. He is the person doing the production work that makes these nightly posts and videos possible. Those terrifying days made the fight against medical disinformation feel even more personal, and the compassion of his doctors, nurses, and support staff reminded me how much depends on people who keep caring for one another. Our time is limited. We deserve to spend it living, not constantly defending the institutions that make life possible. The midterms will be here soon. Help someone make a voting plan, get to the polls, and bring others with them.
