Trump’s outlandish Las Vegas speech was an all-time low for the presidency

At a Las Vegas casino, with a noticeably fuller head of freshly dyed orange hair, the President of the United States emerged to speak about “Working Families Tax Cuts.” He spoke for an hour and sixteen minutes, but very little of it was about working families or tax cuts. He opened with a moment of silence for a fallen police officer, a 30-year-old Marine veteran shot the day before. But later, when the governor mentioned that same officer’s name, Officer Austin Abdelnabi, the crowd loudly booed, and the governor had to stop and correct them: “No, no, we’re not booing him. He’s the officer that passed away.” The consensus was that the crowd heard an Arabic-sounding name and reacted, right after Trump had spent time attacking the Michigan Democratic Senator nominee, saying he “hates” Jewish people with a passion. That is the atmosphere he created.

From there came the lies and the cruelty. He called Democratic cities “filthy” and said they “stink.” He said people who drive electric cars have “a disease,” then added moments later, “And I like electric cars.” He called Canadians “nasty.” On elections, he said that with “fair and strong” elections, Democrats “would never be elected again,” openly calling for the end of political competition. On the Supreme Court, he said of the three liberal justices, “I’d fire them if I could,” before catching himself. This is a man saying out loud that he wants to dismantle a co-equal branch of government.

But the most dangerous part was the word he used more than a dozen times: communist. He called it a greater threat than World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, and 9/11, and claimed with Democrats in power, “At the end of the year, you’ll have nothing but death, squalor, poverty. You’ll have a life of hell.” This is McCarthyism, the same tactic used in the 1950s to destroy lives, where the accusation alone was enough. And it is coordinated across the entire party. But what he calls communism bears no resemblance to anything any elected Democrat has proposed. It describes Denmark, Norway, Australia, Canada, and Germany, capitalist countries with free elections, free press, and universal healthcare.

What we watched was a man imploding from within, reaching for the ugliest fear he can find because his approval is at record lows. And in a way, that desperation is a reason for hope, because he knows that when Democrats take back Congress in November, his unchecked power ends. He is willing to say anything to keep his base angry enough to show up. But we are seeing all of it too.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.
