Very early Saturday morning, Donald Trump shared a video that asked us to see him as a man chosen by God, a historic savior, and a “peacemaking president.” Dark images of the White House gave way to promises of strength, destiny, and a golden age. By Sunday, the man being sold to us as a steady hand was telling Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst that his options included “wiping Iran out, letting them rot economically, or making a deal.” He asked, “My question is, if and when do I blow the entire nation up? They better behave.” Hours after his unexplained early return from Camp David, he had headed to his golf course in Virginia. When asked about the embassy alerts and regional escalation, he called it “no different from any other weekend.” That is the distance between the presidency his propaganda depicts and the one we are actually living through.
We still do not know what prompted that sudden return to Washington. I will not pretend we have answers that the White House has not given us. But the danger does not disappear because Trump can fit in a round of golf. I keep thinking about Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The two situations aren’t identical, but that history shows what it means to take presidential power seriously. Kennedy was a president that listened to advisers, including those who disagreed with him, and weighed decisions knowing that millions of lives could depend on his restraint. A president’s job is to understand that the consequences of his decisions reach into every home. No dramatic video, declaration of divine destiny, or image claiming an entire hemisphere can substitute for that responsibility.
When Pete was in the hospital, he wanted to come home to “his girls,” our daughters and pets. When we were together again, he lit up. That ordinary love is what I think about when a president talks casually about destroying a nation. Military families want their people home, too. Decisions made in the Oval Office eventually become the realities the rest of us have to survive. Now Trump is preparing for the United Nations General Assembly and meetings with world leaders, while Congress has been sent home before votes on the Iran war, Pete Hegseth, and the Epstein 2.0 bill. He is also shutting out members of the press who refuse to give him only favorable coverage. With 44 days left until the midterms, our responsibility is to keep talking about what is happening, challenge the desperate efforts of the White House to make it seem normal, and turn that determination into votes. This direction is not permanent. We still have the power to demand something different.
