Just after 1:00 this afternoon, Donald Trump stood in front of a steel beam and gave his first public remarks after the country handed him a crushing defeat. For 21 minutes, he talked about his construction projects instead of the election that had just handed Democrats control of Congress. When reporters asked whether he was worried about impeachment, he insisted he wasn’t, then barked, “Watch the beam go up,” and turned away. They kept asking. When would the war in Iran end? “Whenever I want it to,” he finally answered, before getting distracted by the beam again. The president had summoned the press to a place where workers would applaud, and things still went the way he wanted. Watching him retreat into marble and steel while his grip on power slipped, the parallels to past strongmen and their architectural fantasies were impossible to ignore.
Trump can try to rewrite the results, but the world noticed what Americans did. European leaders expressed cautious hope for Ukraine, trade, and stability, while Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister acknowledged that the Democrats’ approach would be “extremely negative” toward Russia. Inside Trump’s own circle, J.D. Vance blamed the Iran war for Republican losses. The White House then promised that efforts to impeach him or reverse his agenda would fail. But accountability is taking shape. Thomas Massie has eight impeachment articles against Pete Hegseth and intends to seek a vote as soon as next week. Robert Garcia, in line to chair House Oversight, plans public testimony about the Epstein files, investigations into the Trump family’s business dealings, hearings on ICE misconduct, and questions for Elon Musk about DOGE. These are the beginnings of the work of building a case, gathering evidence, and making the people who believed themselves untouchable answer to the law.
Yesterday, I put on a blue dress without thinking about it. My daughter wore blue, too. At my doctor’s appointment, the doctor wore bright blue scrubs and the receptionist wore a blue sweater. Nobody had coordinated any of it. Nearly everyone I saw talked about relief and joy, including independents and Republican holdouts. After two years of hell, it felt good to be proud of what our country had done. We need to celebrate that, and then prepare ourselves. Trump still has two years of executive power, and his administration is already renewing its attacks on the press. Independent journalists, content creators, and everyday people speaking out will have to keep reaching the people corporate propaganda does not serve.
