At 4:10 this afternoon, the President of the United States signed two executive orders in direct defiance of the Supreme Court. Five weeks earlier, the Court had ruled 6 to 3 in Trump v. Barbara that his attempt to strip birthright citizenship, a right that has been law since 1868, was unconstitutional. Two of the justices who ruled against him were his own appointees. Yet today he sat at the Resolute Desk and called that ruling “close.” It was not close. He needed that lie as cover for what he did next: sign a new version of the same order the highest court had already struck down. He had Stephen Miller stand behind him and reframe a defeat as authorization, claiming the ruling let them “expand the definitions” of who is ineligible, when the ruling did the exact opposite.
This is a man who believes he is above both the Constitution and the truth. He claimed “hundreds of thousands” exploit birthright citizenship, inventing a story about a man with 56 children, when his own Solicitor General couldn’t provide a single number to the Court. Miller falsely claimed the 14th Amendment was only ever meant for the children of slaves, when the men who wrote it deliberately rejected narrower language. And remember, this is the same administration selling a “Trump Gold Card” that lets any foreign national with a million dollars buy their way in. The message is clear: being born here is a “scam,” but if you are wealthy enough, you can purchase your belonging. Trump also suggested Dr. Anthony Fauci should be prosecuted, defending two men convicted of defying Congress while targeting a scientist, echoing what authoritarian regimes have always done. You do not silence scientists because they are dangerous. You silence them because evidence is an authority that does not come from the leader, and evidence cannot be bullied into telling a dictator what he wants to hear.
He even contradicted himself in the span of a single day. That morning, he posted that the U.S. has “massive amounts” of munitions and threatened “long-term jail sentences” for the “treasonous” leakers. Hours later, at the signing, he admitted some munitions supplies are “a little bit tighter,” without seeming to notice he had just called that same truth a crime punishable by death. And woven through it all, he mused again about how long he might stay in office, “which could be a long time, who knows,” on the same day he shared a Trump 2028 poster. It is exhausting, and many of us want to check out. But we bear witness because it is our job to document, because it reminds us we are not alone, and because knowledge is power even when it is a painful load to carry. We are 88 days from the midterms. The American people are done. And on November 3rd, we take back our power.
