At 2:30 in the afternoon, after spending the majority of the weekend isolated at his New Jersey golf club, the President of the United States broke his silence with an important message for the world: he had made “The Winning Shot in the Bedminster Club Championship!” He won his own tournament, on his own course, run by his own employees, against members who pay him dues, and he needed everyone to know. “It’s called TALENT, and I have it, and they don’t!” A sportswriter who interviewed more than 100 golf pros for a book on Trump found he has never won a championship at a course he does not own and operate. The one time he entered an outside tournament with independent judges and cameras, he finished near dead last. That is the same talent now telling us he is winning his war in Iran.
Four hours later, gripping the wall of Air Force One to stay upright, he spoke to reporters. Asked about supporting Japan’s currency, he said Japan has been good to us “with the exception, of course, of Pearl Harbor,” a reference no modern president would make about a now-close ally and sacred ground. Asked about a “punishment” for Canada’s wildfire smoke, he smirked and said, “You’ll find out about it soon.” And asked about Iran, he twice described a strike he called off as one that “would have been by far the biggest attack since World War II,” casually invoking a war that killed 70 million people on his way back from playing golf. He again claimed a deal was “imminent,” possibly the 39th time he has said peace was close, and every time before, it collapsed, and more people died. Iran’s own state media mocked it as a “wish list” and said there are no negotiations with the United States. Even his own intelligence officials confirmed Iran posed no imminent threat, and one resigned in protest.
And at 8:07, back at the White House, he posted an AI image of himself seated shoulder to shoulder with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, the three of them signing a historic document together. Washington, who turned down a crown for a republic. Lincoln, who held the Union together and was assassinated for it. And Trump, who spent his weekend collecting a trophy from his own employees. Authoritarian leaders have always needed this kind of manufactured cult of personality. Stalin doctored photographs. North Korea’s state media claimed Kim Jong Il shot 38 under par his first time golfing. But none of it is working. His approval is the lowest since he returned to office, and among his own 2024 voters, his net approval has dropped 15 points in just three weeks. History is earned, not created with fake images and empty words. And 93 days from now, the American people will remind him of exactly that.
