At 3:29 this afternoon, Donald Trump sat in the Oval Office, surrounded by loyalists, before leaving for a weekend at Camp David. He held up papers and announced a deal he could barely explain, but the most alarming part of the appearance was what he said about the press. Minutes earlier, he had posted that CNN, MSNOW, and Politico were banned from the White House, with other outlets to follow. When a reporter returned to the subject, he called it “the ban on the free press.” Those were his words. Reminded that the First Amendment protects that freedom, he answered, “Thank you for telling me that.” He said he did not want those outlets in his office and wanted the ban to go as far as possible. The New York Times and Washington Post were named as potential future targets. He is telling journalists that access depends on whether he approves of what they report.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders tried to defend him by pointing out that reporters were standing in the Oval Office asking questions. But that is precisely the opportunity he had just announced he was taking from three news organizations. Her defense exposed the contradiction. Even a fight he ultimately loses can create friction during the 46 days before the midterms. That is why the timing matters. Journalists are doing the difficult work that allows us to see what this administration would rather conceal. Punishing their access threatens our ability to hold power accountable.
I am writing from the hospital on day three with my family member, exhausted and struck by how familiar this feeling of uncertainty has become. We keep bracing for the next bad thing before we have processed the last one. Today a volunteer walked down the hallway with a service dog, offering patients a moment of warmth in a frightening place. The nurses, doctors, technicians, housekeeping staff, and care assistants keep making the unbearable survivable. They remind me that the loudest and cruelest people are not the whole country. There are people showing up every day to care for strangers and do what is right.
