At 7:37 in the morning, Melania Trump sat on the white couch at Fox & Friends and tried to explain why we see so little of her. “You don’t see me everywhere, but behind the scenes I’m working nonstop,” she said. Then she was asked how her husband was doing in his second term. Her answer was not the usual declaration of greatness. “I think he’s doing the best that he can.” She also said that she tells him the truth, even when he does not want to hear it. After spending so much of this presidency out of public view, Melania was suddenly on Fox & Friends, Fox Business, and the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. We need to ask why, and why now.
The administration is desperately trying to reach women voters. They are stretching grocery budgets, sending their children to schools with lockdown drills, watching aggressive immigration enforcement unfold in their communities, and living with the consequences of lost reproductive rights. These are family issues, and a television appearance does not make any of them disappear. Yet Melania’s answer included launching IMPERIA, an invite-only collective that an adviser described as a “Davos for Women.” She spoke about ownership, businesses, real estate, capital, and intellectual property. I hear an enormous distance between that message and the women trying to keep their households afloat. While she defended her husband, he was on Truth Social sharing a book cover pairing himself with Winston Churchill and a video mocking journalists. Even his elaborate welcome for Xi Jinping produced the image of Trump wincing at the bomber flyover while Xi stood beside him without a visible reaction. The effort to project strength keeps running into what we can see for ourselves.
There is a familiar question here about the role a president’s wife takes on when concerns about his leadership grow. Nancy Reagan exercised considerable influence behind the scenes. Melania is stepping directly in front of the cameras, even telling us that she spends her free time reading executive orders. That comparison does not tell us what is happening inside this White House, but it makes the sudden change in her public role harder to dismiss. To me, this looks like an administration trying to change the picture before the midterms, especially for women who have grown tired of carrying the burden. A publicity campaign cannot repair the conditions causing that frustration. What matters now is that more Americans are paying attention, recognizing the gap between the presentation and their own lives, and preparing to make their voices heard. In a few weeks, they will have the opportunity to carry that judgment into the voting booth.
