At 7:37 this morning, she sat all the way at the end of the white couch on the set of Fox & Friends, legs crossed, wearing a striped blazer and a matching skirt. Through the studio windows directly behind Melania Trump, you could see the bustle of Sixth Avenue in New York City, cars passing and pedestrians walking beneath the many American flags hanging above the street.
During this early morning interview that lasted less than 11 minutes, the First Lady tried to explain away her noticeable absence from the traditional work of the First Lady, saying, “You don’t see me everywhere, but behind the scenes I’m working nonstop.” She tried to explain the president’s unusual decision to personally greet Chinese President Xi Jinping when his plane arrives, rather than waiting for him at the White House, by saying it was because of their “great relationship.” And when she was asked how she thought Donald Trump was doing in his second term compared with his first, she gave an answer that must have made Trump’s team sick to their stomachs.
Instead of saying he was doing a great job, or any of the other things his sycophants normally say about his “greatness,” his own wife, the First Lady of the United States, chose instead to say, “I think he’s doing the best that he can.”
That was just the start of a very busy day for Melania Trump, who was about to do something we almost never see her do. After 20 months spent as far from the public view as possible, appearing only when absolutely necessary, she was suddenly everywhere today, purposely stepping directly into the spotlight, one event after the next, to provide a distraction for her husband to win back women voters ahead of the midterms, and to secure herself a place in the future for when Donald Trump is gone.
Sitting in the Fox & Friends studio, she also told the hosts that she always tells Donald Trump the truth. “Sometimes he doesn’t want to hear it, what I tell him, but that’s okay,” she said. “I always say the truth.”
Once again, his own wife gave us a glimpse into the mind of the president and reinforced what we already know to be true about him: he does not like hearing the truth, and he resists hearing anything that he does not want to hear. That says a lot about him as a person, but it says even more about him as a leader.
Presidents are surrounded by people whose job is to tell them things they don’t want to hear. They are confronted with facts that contradict what they believe. They need to hear intelligence reports that don’t fit the story they want to tell. They have to listen to warnings about what could happen if they make the wrong decision. When the person sitting at the very top of our government, who holds enormous power over the lives of more than 340 million people, resists hearing any of those truths, it becomes much easier for everyone around them to stop sharing what is really happening, or for people with nefarious intentions to manipulate them by feeding them the information they know they want to hear.
What made this week so different from others, and what made what she said ring so much louder, is that Melania Trump has not been a visible or present First Lady. She has spent the majority of this second term living between Trump Tower in Manhattan and Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach rather than at the White House. This living arrangement was of her own choosing. CNN reported back in October of 2025 that she was “eschewing the nation’s capital for New York and Palm Beach” and running the Office of the First Lady with what they then described as a “skeletal staff.” People magazine reported that they had been “living separate lives” and that her absence “should not come as a surprise to anyone because this is how she lives.” She wasn’t there when Trump hosted the Prime Minister of Japan, the King of Jordan, or the Prime Minister of India. A Daily Beast analysis found that through July of this year, she had only been seen publicly on 38 days.
So when we see the most absent First Lady in modern American history suddenly appear over and over again in a single day, on Fox & Friends, Fox Business, and on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, just one day after she sat in the audience at the United Nations General Assembly, we need to ask not just what she was doing, but why, and why now.
While Melania was on Fox & Friends defending her husband’s energy levels, Donald Trump had already traveled back to the White House and was posting nonsense on social media. He spent his day on Truth Social sharing a book cover with his portrait next to Winston Churchill’s titled “Trump and Churchill: Defenders of Western Civilization.” He also shared an unhinged and immature video mocking journalists, specifically CNN reporters, that made him look like a fool and not them.
That was what he did instead of responding to the speech Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, gave today, where he stood at the same podium Trump had just stood at the day before and held up photographs of the late Ayatollah Khamenei and more than 150 schoolchildren killed during American strikes. “You see these children?” Pezeshkian said. “These children perished under bombs, with weapons used by the United States and Israel. They were innocent, had committed no crimes.” There were no comments from Trump about those children.
Trump said nothing about any of it. His main public appearance today was when he greeted Chinese President Xi Jinping after his plane landed at Joint Base Andrews. And even that was an appearance he probably should have skipped.
Trump decided to travel all the way to the airport to personally greet China’s authoritarian leader, and to have American service members roll out a 100-foot red carpet for his arrival. There are even images of our service members on their hands and knees smoothing and brushing the carpet out beneath the Chinese President’s aircraft. As bad as the visuals were from that, it only got worse for Donald Trump. As part of the military welcome ceremony, two American B-1 bombers soared overhead. As they made their pass, Trump visibly cowered and winced at the sound while Xi stood beside him with no visible reaction. What was designed to display American power instead showed a weak and vulnerable President of the United States who is scared of the sound of planes flying above him.
There is no doubt a multitude of reasons for Melania to make such a grand display of her presence this week. It came at a moment when her husband’s approval ratings are at their lowest, the midterms are weeks away, and his support among women has fallen significantly. Bringing Melania out like this and parading her around was an obvious show of desperation, especially when you consider that Melania Trump was everywhere talking about women.
Women have plenty on their minds right now, and rightfully so. Women are primarily the ones standing in grocery store aisles, seeing the direct consequences of Trump’s presidency and the skyrocketing cost of food. Women are stretching household budgets to the point they are breaking. Women are sending their children to schools where lockdown drills have become part of growing up. Women are living in communities where aggressive immigration enforcement has unfolded on residential streets and in front of their children. Women are living with the consequences of major changes to reproductive rights following the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade. That is not to say that none of this affects men as well. These are American family issues, but the Trump Administration knows that women, especially, have grown tired of carrying so much of the burden and are watching their families pay the price.
Melania’s other stops today included ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange and launching something called IMPERIA, an invite-only collective that one of her advisers has described as a “Davos for Women,” designed to bring together female CEOs, founders, entrepreneurs, and business leaders.
“Women are not just a part of the marketplace. We are its foundation and its infrastructure,” Melania said as she called on women to “move beyond mentorship and toward ownership.” She talked about owning businesses, equity, real estate, capital, investment assets, ideas, and intellectual property as if she herself were some kind of business genius and mastermind. She failed to mention that she was the recipient of a marriage that came with enormous benefits, including a penthouse, private jet, a $40 million Amazon documentary deal, and the eventual title of First Lady of the United States.
What she did and is doing this week is growing closer in comparison to a similar time in the 1980s, when we had another president whose cognitive health was being publicly questioned and whose wife stepped into a much larger role. Back then, the wife of the president actually cared for him. This time, it seems to be more of a business arrangement than one born out of love, but the dynamic is the same.
Toward the end of Ronald Reagan’s presidency, questions about his cognitive health and abilities were being raised, and the questions were mounting. At the same time, Nancy Reagan had made herself extraordinarily influential inside the White House. It was said that she controlled the access others had to her husband and that she had an oversized influence over all aspects of his schedule. She even involved herself in White House and Reagan Administration staffing decisions. Years after he left office, Reagan announced that he had Alzheimer’s disease. When researchers eventually studied his presidential press conferences from the later years of his presidency, they found changes in his language associated with cognitive decline that had begun appearing while he was still in office.
But there is one important difference between Nancy Reagan and what we are watching Melania Trump do right now. Nancy purposely protected her husband by working mostly away from the press and public, keeping her influence behind the scenes. Melania is taking a different path and stepping directly in front of the cameras. She even said today that when she has free time, she is reading executive orders instead of books or watching television, something nobody elected Melania Trump to do.
When we look at the bigger picture, we see a president whose approval rating keeps dropping, a First Lady who was forced out of hiding to help, and an administration trying desperately to change what Americans are seeing before the midterms. None of this paints a picture of strength or stability. This isn’t a temporary political problem for the president that can be fixed by parading his out-of-touch wife around in front of the cameras either. The frustration and anger surrounding his poor leadership are only growing and deepening his party’s problems. All of this is forcing more Americans to pay attention, resist, and in just a few weeks they will have the opportunity to make their own voices heard at the ballot box. That is why I still have hope for America. And you should, too.

Picture of the day: Happy first day of fall! I’m enjoying the cooler days and trying to soak up these longer days before they are gone.
I spent the majority of my time today learning about my own local candidates and figuring out what I can do to get more involved. Even in my very blue hometown, we are on the edge of potentially having a completely MAGA-aligned mayor and city council. And unfortunately, just like when I talk to people about the federal candidates, I’m seeing and hearing from others that there is a real lack of information getting to voters about the local races. People simply don’t know who is running, what they stand for, or what is on the line in November.
Unfortunately, there isn’t enough time to build up a team of others to help get the message out here and in other close races for the midterms, but I’m going to focus on doing that ahead of the 2028 elections. In the meantime, I’m going to create as much content as I can focused on this local race. I can sleep in a couple of months!
I’ve spent so much time talking about what is happening nationally, but today was a good reminder for me that what happens in our own backyards matters just as much. These local elections help feed into the candidate pool for future federal elections, and they also determine who will be making decisions in our own communities right now, including how local government responds when federal policies overreach and affect the people who live here.
