At 9:30 in the morning, Kash Patel raised his right hand before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Minutes later, he was defending changes to FBI hiring standards that left even Republican Senator John Kennedy asking how his explanation made sense. Patel insisted he was protecting victims. The actual policy change concerning bestiality or animal cruelty applies to conduct before eighteen, a qualification that matters, and the changes also cover certain past thefts from employers and payments for sex. The director still owed the committee a clear explanation. Instead, a hearing about accountability became a spectacle of deflection and insults. I had to take breaks and watch in sections. Seeing the person leading our most powerful law enforcement agency behave this way was embarrassing and frightening.
Cory Booker challenged Patel’s fitness to lead, and their exchange deteriorated into shouting. Adam Schiff offered a different kind of warning: a future Congress would investigate the potentially wrongful termination of agents who worked on properly predicated investigations. That warning reaches the people carrying out orders, too. Richard Blumenthal asked about allegations that FBI officials were fired on White House instructions. Peter Welch asked Patel to pledge that the bureau would not interfere in the election, and Patel answered with an accusation of lies. These are questions the public deserves to have answered. The FBI’s independence, the treatment of its agents, and its conduct around elections matter far more than the director’s ability to deliver an insult. Watching oversight treated with contempt makes the weakness in our government painfully visible.
Beyond the hearing, there were people willing to keep pushing back. Judge Christopher Cooper blocked the Kennedy Center board’s latest effort to put Trump’s name back on the building. Trump reportedly berated Joyce Beatty, whose lawsuit challenged that effort, and the board voted to close the center. Beatty kept showing up anyway. Thomas Massie brought eight impeachment articles against Pete Hegseth, while Al Green forced another vote on impeaching Trump. I am not pretending those efforts will have any effect or that Massie has suddenly become someone I admire. The House moved quickly to stop Green’s effort. But forcing votes creates a record, with names attached, that constituents can judge. We have seen Americans use their collective power in difficult times before.
