At 1:44 this afternoon, the cameras went live to find the President of the United States slumped forward in his chair, staring off past the reporters with a confused look, seemingly unaware everyone was waiting for him to begin. The event was supposed to honor military families, with the signing of an executive order establishing a Military Spouse Commission. But of the 56 minutes, he spent just 14 on the commission and 42 minutes on tirades that had nothing to do with why anyone was gathered there. He claimed to “know Europe better than anybody, better than the people that run it,” ranted that trees in blue cities “are all gross,” and said of Iran, “I want to give them every last chance before decapitation.” The women standing behind him represented families who move every two to three years, give up their own careers, and raise children alone through long deployments. They deserved a president who could listen and commit to something real. Instead, they watched him describe the war that has killed at least 18 service members as “working out very well.”
And even at their event, he made it about himself. He turned the press questions into loyalty tests, praising reporters from friendly outlets and telling one from MSNOW, “You’re fake news. Don’t ever talk again.” He spent more time ranting about his own U.S. Attorney, Jeanine Pirro, than he did discussing military families, furious that she dropped the Reflecting Pool case after her office found the damage was caused by a botched contractor job, not the vandalism he keeps lying about. Asked whether a congressman accused of horrific domestic violence should resign, he said, “He’s a good person,” while his allies privately push to save the seat, worried not about the allegations but about losing it in November.
He again claimed to have called off a strike on Iran that would have been “harder than any attack since World War II,” at least the fifth time since April he has run the same cycle: threaten annihilation, pull back, claim they begged him to wait. He insulted our closest allies, calling the United Kingdom “essentially a bankrupt country” and saying “any country with windmills is a loser.”
But 92 days from the midterms, his grip keeps breaking. Yesterday, the Supreme Court issued its final judgment upholding birthright citizenship. Trump had vowed to fight it, promising an immediate appeal, but the deadline came and went with nothing filed. He knew he would lose and did not want another public defeat. Birthright citizenship, the idea that if you are born here, you belong here, is no longer in question. They tried to take it away, and they failed.
