At a Senate hearing yesterday, a Republican senator from Ohio erupted at the microphone, screaming profanity at an 85-year-old scientist. “Who the f*ck do you think you were?” Bernie Moreno shouted at Dr. Anthony Fauci, calling him a “megalomaniac” and declaring that his 50-year legacy “ends in total and complete disgrace.” Through nearly three hours of blame, ridicule, and humiliation, Fauci never lost his composure. He saw the game for what it was: not an investigation into the COVID response, but a trap designed to manufacture a perjury charge, one word they could distort and weaponize. So the man who had testified before Congress more than 250 times over four decades, serving seven presidents, did the only thing he could. For the first time in his life, he invoked the Fifth Amendment over a hundred times, refusing to give them the clip they came for.
This was McCarthyism, plain and simple, just with the target changed. In the 1950s, Joseph McCarthy dragged scientists and officials before committees for loyalty tests and treated silence as a confession of guilt, exactly as Josh Hawley did when he sneered, “Nothing says honesty like taking the Fifth.” But consider who they were attacking. Dr. Fauci directed his institute for 38 years, was the architect of PEPFAR, which has saved an estimated 25 million lives, guided the country through AIDS, anthrax, Ebola, and Zika, and helped deliver a COVID vaccine in under a year, the very vaccine Trump took credit for and gave Fauci a commendation for. The cost of his service was death threats against his wife and daughters and a man arrested with an AR-15 on his way to assassinate him. More than 155 scientists signed a letter calling him a national hero. They can’t even keep their propaganda straight: COVID was a hoax, but Trump deserves credit for the vaccine; it was just the flu, but also a bioweapon Fauci funded.
And the whole spectacle was designed to make us look backward while they destroy the present. Because while they built a fake case against the man who could help most, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has gutted the health department, replacing the independent vaccine panel with skeptics. Measles, declared eliminated 26 years ago, has come roaring back with the highest case count in 35 years. Nearly 18,000 Americans are sick with a parasite. Dr. Fauci’s legacy was written over 50 years of saving lives. Theirs will be that they treated a hero like a criminal while the country got sicker. We are 97 days from the midterms. And that is when the American people show them they have had enough.
