At the Deerfield Residence in Dublin, Donald Trump spent 35 minutes turning a diplomatic visit into another performance about himself. He talked about golf, told a story about the Secret Service treating a companion as collateral damage, attacked Joe Biden, repeated his lie about winning three elections, and moved between boasts about war and warnings for NATO allies. He also told a room full of Irish people that they were “some of the most vicious bastards.” Thousands of Irish people were in the streets refusing to welcome this president as if everything were normal. Their protests carried a message far beyond Dublin. They showed Americans who are fighting this administration that we are not standing alone.
One of the most revealing moments came when Trump explained why he cannot cheat at golf: too many Secret Service agents would see him move the ball. He did not offer a moral objection. He described the problem of getting caught. The same speech drifted between calling Venezuela a military conflict and bragging that we won a war, while his comments about Iran and NATO treated violence and threats as casual talking points. That is the president representing us abroad. Meanwhile, at home, Jimmy Kimmel said his interview with James Talarico would not air on television out of consideration for local stations, particularly affiliates in Texas, due to threats from the FCC. They posted it on YouTube instead, where it had more than seven million views. The pressure on broadcasters is censorship, and the response as evidence that attempts to suppress a voice can send far more people looking for it.
We have to protect the ways that information still reaches us. That means taking the time to find trustworthy independent reporting and supporting the people who keep doing it, instead of assuming the nightly news will tell us everything we need to know. I have been moving my spending toward people and companies whose choices I can support, and paying for subscriptions to people who are speaking out. But nobody should feel pressured to spend money they do not have. Watching an interview is a form of support, too. Those audience numbers matter. From the protesters in Ireland to the people finding another way to get an interview seen, resistance keeps creating openings. We can help keep them open by paying attention, sharing trustworthy work, and refusing to let intimidation decide what we are allowed to hear.
