At 1:46 in the afternoon, Donald Trump stepped outside the White House with oversized gold-plated scissors for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at his new helipad. The helicopter engines were roaring, he was yelling, and across the live video, we could not hear a word he said. His decision to ban members of the free press had caught up with him. CNN, MS NOW, and Politico had filed a federal lawsuit challenging the loss of their credentials, and the television networks faced a choice: replace the CNN crew scheduled to operate the pool camera, or refuse to accommodate what Trump had done. ABC, CBS, NBC, and even Fox News refused to provide a replacement. Five competing networks stood together and said that a president cannot exclude a news organization simply because he objects to its reporting.
When I watched this unfold, what mattered most was the boundary they finally set. Fox’s decision does not erase its role in spreading lies and propaganda, and I see plenty of self-preservation in its response. A president who demands loyalty can decide tomorrow that yesterday’s useful ally has run out of value. Jacqui Heinrich, the White House Correspondents’ Association president and a Fox correspondent, warned that a standard used to exclude one outlet could eventually be used against any of them. Meanwhile, the White House was teasing another project: “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” a stream of administration highlights launched on its YouTube channel. Calling government-selected footage “unfiltered” turns independent reporting into the supposed problem. Asking questions, checking facts, and challenging the people in charge are exactly what make journalism necessary. Taking away reporters’ access while distributing a government-produced version of events is a dangerous direction for this country.
I keep imagining the reaction if Barack Obama or Joe Biden had confiscated Fox reporters’ credentials and then launched a television stream celebrating themselves. Republicans would have demanded hearings, and the First Amendment would have been the only story for weeks. Where is that outrage now? Press freedom belongs to every American, regardless of which president is being questioned or which network is doing the asking. The networks could have treated CNN’s exclusion as someone else’s problem. Instead, they recognized that surrendering that boundary would endanger them all. Their decision cost them coverage, but it made the consequences of Trump’s own ban visible. We cannot count on every institution finding its courage at once. We can recognize what happened here and insist on more of it. People with power need to say no and use that power.
