At 10:16 on Friday night, from his private golf club in Bedminster, the President of the United States posted something no other president would have ever considered sharing. It was an image of Joe Biden golfing, hunched mid-swing, ripping up an ugly divot, captioned to mock him as feeble and incompetent. On any other day, it might have been dismissed as childish. But this was no ordinary day. It was the same day Hunter Biden told the BBC that his father’s cancer had spread into his bones, that he was in a great deal of pain, that watching him suffer was “really, really hard.” While a son described his father’s suffering to the world, the sitting president was mocking the man going through it. That is the cruelty of Donald Trump illustrated in a single post.
The day before that BBC interview aired, I had a conversation with Hunter Biden himself, one that will air in full on Monday. He has been around politics since he was two years old, and what came through was not a family desperate for power, but a deeply feeling one that has faced unimaginable pain. His father is tired and hurting, and he carries it quietly, refusing to complain.
For 19 months, we have searched for an explanation for why Republicans in Congress rolled over so completely, telling ourselves there had to be threats or coercion, something that meant the soul of public service was still intact underneath the fear. It is not. For most of them, it was never about country. It was always about proximity to power and money. And if the silence was never hiding anything deeper, then what we have lost is the foundational idea that public service means putting something larger than yourself first.
But there is a reason these midterms matter more than any in modern times. Reuters reported that senior House Democrats are preparing a detailed investigative strategy for January: not leading with impeachment, but using subpoenas, hearings, and contempt proceedings to go after the companies and financial networks that have profited from this administration. None of that happens unless we show up.
The Senate confirmed Todd Blanche, Trump’s personal criminal defense attorney, as Attorney General by a single vote. That is what we are up against. But the contrast between a man who carries his pain with dignity and still shows up, and a man who mocks him from a golf club, reminds us of something important. We have had nearly 250 years of imperfect but decent leadership. Donald Trump is not the standard we have to accept. He is a dark chapter we still have the power to close. And that choice still belongs to us.
