Early yesterday morning, an interview with the President of the United States was published, filmed deep inside the White House. He struggled to stay calm, at one point declaring “a lot of people are saying I’m one of the greatest presidents ever.” But mostly he spent those 31 minutes building his defense for when his party loses both chambers of Congress in November, and revealing what he really thinks of the Republican Party. When journalist Jake Sherman asked whether Republican voters would turn out without him on the ballot, Trump said, “A lot of them are very angry at Republicans,” before adding, “but they’re not angry at me.” He called MAGA “my beautiful base,” separate from the party he was supposedly there to help. Because Donald Trump has never really seen himself as a Republican. The party was just the vehicle. He is loyal to no one but himself, and the moment the midterms start going wrong, he will blame Republicans to save himself.
He said it over and over. “I won. I’m not campaigning.” Asked about the $400 million super PAC his allies control, he cut the reporter off: “Not my allies. I control it,” and said he could spend it “on pretty much anything I want.” He threatened that if the Senate doesn’t “get smart,” he “may be the last Republican president.” He called his own party “too nice,” “much more gentle” than Democrats, while admiring the opposition for being “smart” and “vicious.” And when Sherman asked directly whether Democrats might impeach him again if they take the House, Trump ignored the question entirely and said, “A lot of people are saying I’m one of the greatest presidents ever.” Sherman corrected him: “They’re not saying that, though.”
The same day the interview dropped, the reality broke through. The July jobs report showed the economy lost 23,000 jobs, when economists had forecast a gain of nearly 100,000. Unemployment ticked down only because 264,000 Americans stopped looking for work entirely. One chief economist called the report “bleak.” This is the president who fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics last year for reporting weak numbers, calling them “rigged.” He can call this “the golden age of America” as many times as he wants, but the numbers tell the truth, and people are starting to feel it in their own lives. The painful reality is that things will likely get worse before they get better, and some who voted for him may not understand they were lied to until they feel it themselves. This is all breaking open right now, 87 days before the midterms. Our country is not too far gone. We still have a way out, using the tools the Constitution gives us. And the world is counting on us to use them.
