Yesterday at Camp David, in a room rarely seen by cameras, the President of the United States sat slumped forward beneath the Presidential Seal, white rings circling his eyes where his orange makeup hadn’t blended, surrounded by a cabinet that took turns praising him. Over 57 minutes, he made comments that left the room genuinely concerned about what he would say next. When the discussion turned to the International Criminal Court, he blurted out, unprompted, “By the way, there’s no information that they’re after me. It could happen.” And near the end, he declared, “I probably was abused more than anybody in the history of our country.” More than enslaved people. More than those in Japanese internment camps. More than those attacked during the Civil Rights movement. And the setting was telling. Camp David is a place Trump openly dislikes and avoids, a place where Carter brokered Middle East peace and Bush planned after 9/11. He went there, to one of the most historically weighty places a president can stand, during one of the worst weeks of his presidency, because he needed reality to look better than it was.
The whole thing was a performance. He opened by calling his party “the party of transparency,” then admitted the press had been hand-picked, thanking reporters for being “very fair,” which is why they were invited, while the ones who would hold him accountable were shut out. Nineteen minutes in, he was already fighting to stay awake. This is the man who holds more power over the world than anyone alive, and he cannot keep his eyes open while his own advisers speak. It raises a serious question about what happens behind the scenes in the moments that actually matter, when he is deciding whether to launch strikes or start new wars.
The public spectacle only masks what the Wall Street Journal exposed behind the scenes. They reported that almost every night, Trump calls his fundraiser, whom he nicknamed the “princess of darkness,” for an update on which companies have cut checks and which have not. In calls with donors, she refers to him as “the boss” and says, “the boss wants this money,” language that sounds like that of a Mob family. He has raised over $800 million since returning to office, with executives understanding they were either “checked on a list, or crossed off a list.” The man who once promised to self-fund now runs what one legal analyst could not distinguish from a protection racket. But today brought a reminder that limits still exist. His own loyal U.S. Attorney was forced to drop the felony case against the 67-year-old Olympian arrested over the Reflecting Pool, admitting in a court filing that the damage was caused by the contractor’s flawed work and the rush to finish, exactly the lie Trump had insisted was sabotage. The truth broke through in a case built by his own Justice Department. If it can break through there, it can break through everywhere.
