At 9:58 in the morning, Donald Trump began posting about AI from inside the White House. He started by claiming that the only guardrail AI needs is a “STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT.” Then came the complaints about permitting, the warnings not to kill the “Golden Goose,” and the attacks on people raising concerns. He even called into the All-In Summit, where Jensen Huang was onstage, to tell an audience of tech leaders that the warnings were a hoax and that AI makes people wealthy. Seeing that first post brought back the same feeling I had watching his pandemic response. There is a serious concern, experts sounding alarms, and a president insisting that his own judgment is all the protection we need. Declaring himself a genius does not give the rest of us safeguards.
AI is already changing how we work and communicate, how convincing disinformation can become, and how governments can surveil their citizens. Its energy and water demands affect the communities around data centers. None of that means banning it or taking it away from responsible users. It means we need enforceable, common-sense regulation, and we need Congress to act. The calls for slower development from Dario Amodei and Sam Altman deserve scrutiny, including scrutiny of their commercial interests. But uncertainty about their motives does not make the need for oversight disappear.
Meanwhile, ProPublica reported that Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch close to Putin, helped pay for Don Jr.’s Bahamas wedding, including the reception island and an estimated $70,000 fireworks display. Chris Murphy used the Senate floor to demand answers, pointing to the Trump family’s business interests and asking why Republicans would accept arrangements they would denounce if another president’s family were involved.
Congress is back in session, and this is a moment to tell our representatives where we stand on AI safeguards and an investigation into the reported wedding financing. I know those calls can feel like spinning our wheels. But congressional offices receive them, and the record of who demanded accountability matters, especially this close to an election. We also had a meaningful court win. The Supreme Court refused to let the administration impose its new mail-ballot requirements while the legal fight continues. The proposed changes would have required federal approval of ballot envelopes and voter information submitted through a new Postal Service system before ballots could be mailed. Keeping that disruption blocked matters for people trying to vote. Keep showing up, keep demanding answers, and keep defending the protections that still stand.
