“In one year, the country will be absolutely bankrupt. You’ll live in squalor.” - Donald Trump

At a General Motors facility in Michigan, before a room full of hardworking Midwesterners, people raised on patriotism, work ethic, and family-first values, the President of the United States stood at the podium and told them: “I’ve done more for you than your parents.” Then he insisted their parents would agree with him. Think about what he was really doing. The man who inherited his wealth, who has never built anything with his own hands, was attempting to insert himself into the most important relationship any of us will ever have, the one between a parent and child. He wants to commandeer the emotional attachment we feel toward the people who raised us, protected us, and taught us right from wrong, and claim it was him all along. It was a preview of the whole speech, which he opened with a story about his own father’s Cadillac before shifting into the thing he does best: peddling fear.

Once he had convinced the room he was the one protecting them, he had to convince them they were still in danger. When a protester yelled that he was a “pedophile protector,” Trump did not deny it. He declared the man a communist, “We’re running against communists now,” and from there, the label spread to the entire Democratic Party. He told the crowd Democrats “want to take your houses,” raise their taxes to 80 percent, and that within a year the country would be “absolutely bankrupt,” that they would “live in squalor” with no police and no firemen. Then he reached for the greatest tragedies in American history, calling an imaginary communist takeover a greater threat than World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, and 9/11. Real events that millions lived through, that cost families the people they loved, were invoked to convince his supporters that the greatest danger America has ever faced is their own neighbors, coworkers, and family members who vote differently.

There is no communist movement threatening to seize American homes. There is only a president who cannot run on reality, on rising costs, on a war he promised would never happen, on masked men detaining people on our streets, so he runs on fear instead. This is the oldest chapter in the fascist playbook: take a word that already carries fear, manufacture a national emergency around it, and convince ordinary people that only the person who created the fear can protect them from it. But the most dangerous part was the backup plan underneath it all. He spent the speech attacking mail-in ballots and voter rolls, building the story of why a vote against him shouldn’t count. We have lived through January 6th. The difference now is that he holds far more institutional power, including a fully compromised DOJ and FBI. We have 99 days until the midterms, and they are feeling the pressure. We know how this story ends when people stay silent, and how it ends when they don’t. And in November, our voices will be heard.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.

Independent journalism is under attack. You can make a difference with a $5/month paid subscription. Your support allows me to keep telling the truth about the lies and destruction unfolding in our country, defend myself from constant pressure from MAGA extremists, and ultimately spread the message to more people.

I’m fighting to save our country (before it’s too late).

I’ll see you tomorrow,

Heather
