On the morning of a funeral for a man he called one of the greatest people he ever knew, the President of the United States gave a live phone interview to Fox & Friends that was supposed to be a tribute to the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Instead, he spent much of it describing, with chilling matter-of-factness, how he would bring death and devastation to millions of Iranian civilians. “I could take out most of their bridges in less than an hour,” he said. “Within one day, all of their power plants would be gone.” He talked about 91 million people left without power, and even admitted, “there’s always the desalination plants, and who am I hurting there? I’m hurting the people.” This is the same man who, as the first bombs fell in February, told the “great, proud people of Iran” that “the hour of your freedom is at hand.” Five months later, on the morning of a friend’s funeral, he described making their country unlivable on purpose, something that under international law could well be considered a war crime.
And buried in that same interview was a line that may explain everything. “Frankly, if I weren’t president of the United States, Israel today would not exist.” He said it without hesitation, and maybe we should take him at his word, because if he genuinely believes he is personally responsible for Israel’s survival, much of what he has done starts to make sense. The war with Iran was not an American security emergency. It was Israel’s top strategic priority. Netanyahu has been at his side at every turning point, and flew to Washington just last night for a private meeting with no press allowed. By his own admission, he is not leading this. He is being led. He also brushed aside the Supreme Court’s ruling against his tariff authority, saying, “Now I have other ways of doing the same thing.” The highest court told him no, and his response was to find a way around it, because he decided long ago the law does not apply to him.
Hours later, at Washington National Cathedral, he stood to eulogize the friend who gave him everything. Reading the line “virtually everyone liked Lindsey,” he stopped, looked up, and said, “Well, not everybody.” He could not let a single generous sentence about a dead friend stand. Throughout the service he struggled to stay awake. Lindsey Graham gave Trump his loyalty, his reputation, his credibility, and his dignity, and defended him when no one else would. And what he got in return was a president who could not stay awake at his funeral and edited his eulogy to make it less generous. That is the loyalty Trump offers everyone standing beside him. He will drain you until you are empty, then do the bare minimum to grieve you. We are 97 days from the midterms. This is our chance to remind the world that America has always been bigger than one man, and that this country still belongs to its people.
