Donald Trump stood on a political stage in Dallas and promised every adult American $5,000 if Republicans win control of the House and Senate. He called it the “Trump dividend,” comparing the country to a successful company distributing cash to its shareholders. Except our country is not his business, and he is not offering money out of his own pocket. He is telling people that keeping his party in power comes with a check. That was the most revealing moment in an hour-and-47-minute speech surrounded by empty sections of the arena, reports of unsolicited texts offering free tickets, and a podium that could not even keep all the letters in “Dallas” attached. He wanted the audience to remember him as the man who started an amazing economy. What I heard was a president willing to promise an extraordinary amount of public money to preserve his power.
The scale alone should stop us. Using roughly 260 million adults, $5,000 apiece would cost more than $1.3 trillion. Americans have already heard promises about dividend checks that never arrived. Meanwhile, the deeper warning is about what happens after the votes are counted, when delayed changes in the Big Beautiful Bill begin affecting working families. The rest of the convention followed the same pattern of loyalty and spectacle. There was praise for Mike Johnson, hostility toward the press, and John Fetterman appearing in a prerecorded video to introduce Dave McCormick. The White House celebrated Fetterman while Democrats publicly condemned him. It all served an evening organized around keeping Republicans in control.
As I watched, I kept thinking beyond the next two years of Trump’s presidency. Clarence Thomas is 78, and Samuel Alito is 76. If a seat opens, Senate control could determine whether Trump gets another Supreme Court appointment, with consequences lasting decades. We cannot let the fact that some of us made it through his first presidency become an excuse to assume we will make it through this one unharmed. The damage is already here. Trump told his audience to vote as though he himself were on the ballot, and in every meaningful way, he is. His power is on the ballot. His war is on the ballot. The future of the Supreme Court is on the ballot. So is the idea that a president can attach a promised government check to his party’s victory. We need people to understand those connections and show up on election day ready to decide what kind of country we are willing to accept.
