At 6:19 pm, somewhere between Ireland and Washington, Donald Trump walked into the press cabin on Air Force One wanting to know whether everyone liked the music he had picked. The reporters had a different question. With Xi’s Washington visit approaching, would Trump ask him about reports that Chinese entities supplied satellite imagery used in an Iranian strike that killed three American soldiers? “They do what we do,” he answered. Then he said he thought Xi had “behaved reasonably well.” The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States had connected that imagery to the attack on the housing area at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, Private Isabella Gonzales, and Staff Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad were killed. Four others were wounded.
On the same flight, Trump blamed high diesel prices on Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries and said he had asked President Zelensky to stop hitting them. Those strikes have contributed to the shortage. But they do not erase the far larger disruption from Trump’s war in Iran and the damage to oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Now the Red Sea alternative is under threat as well, with Iran-backed forces taking Mokha and Perim Island and the Houthis striking a Saudi pipeline. People are paying more while the president tries to shift responsibility to a country fighting for its survival. We need leaders willing to confront him now.
The danger does not end when the votes are counted. Conservative former judge J. Michael Luttig has warned that Republicans could refuse to seat elected Democrats, describing how interference with the House Clerk’s roll could provoke a constitutional crisis. That is a warning about what could happen, not a result we should accept as inevitable. Election officials are already preparing contingencies for threats involving ballots, polling places, and the mail. I know the weight of watching all of this is catching up with so many of us. Fifty days can feel impossibly short and unbearably long at the same time. As ballots begin going out, more people will pay attention. Our job is to reach them, help them understand what is at stake, and get as many people as possible to vote. We cannot sit out this election while waiting for a perfect candidate or a more comfortable moment.
