Donald Trump welcomed Xi Jinping to the White House and seemed determined to show him every monument he is building to himself. There was the new granite helipad, Marine One, the ballroom construction site, and the gold-framed presidential portraits. At the place where Joe Biden’s portrait should have been, Trump pointed to a photograph of an autopen and mocked his predecessor while Xi and his entourage laughed. Minutes later, he was showing off a photograph of himself with Xi and telling him, “We have a lot of respect for you.” That contrast stayed with me. He used the White House to ridicule a democratically elected American president while flattering an authoritarian leader who has never faced a free election. After their meeting, one of the things Trump wanted to tell us was that Xi likes granite. He had spent the morning praising Xi’s appearance online and even incorrectly called Peng Liyuan “Madam Xi.” The day’s presentation told us plenty about the relationship Trump wanted the cameras to capture. It told us far less about what Americans were getting from it.
At the state dinner, that contrast became harder to ignore. Reporting placed some of the most powerful figures in business in the room, alongside Supreme Court justices and Fox News personalities. Trump presented Xi with a gold eagle sculpture and invited the guests to see his unfinished ballroom. Then the leader of the Chinese Communist Party connected Trump’s promise to make America great again with China’s goal of national rejuvenation, saying the two ambitions could be “mutually reinforcing.” Trump regularly uses accusations of communism against his domestic opponents. Yet here was the actual leader of a communist government linking his ambitions to MAGA inside the White House. And after all the ceremony, the outcome described so far was an extension of the tariff truce without major breakthroughs on the other disputes.
With the midterms 40 days away, taking back Congress offers a beginning: restoring checks and balances and pursuing accountability. It will not finish the job. This country was built through the labor and suffering of enslaved people and the determination of immigrants from China, Japan, Vietnam, and so many other places. Remembering what they contributed makes the work ahead feel like a responsibility we cannot abandon. The America worth fighting for is still beautiful, vast, and full of possibility. We have to keep seeing it clearly enough to build toward it.
