Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to interview Hunter Biden. It was a conversation I never would have imagined having even a year ago. During the hour that I spoke with him, he shared numerous insights into politics in Washington, D.C., and also a devastating health update on his father. We discussed his sobriety, and I challenged him on his recent strategy to sit down with people that I personally would not ever speak to or lend credibility to. There were moments when I agreed with him, moments when I strongly disagreed, and moments that forced me to reconsider some of my own assumptions. But there was one part of our conversation that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since.
Since Trump has taken office again, I have been trying to understand why the Republican members of Congress have given very little, if any, pushback to Trump and the dangerous path he is taking our country down. I imagined that there had to be a reason they had all immediately surrendered their power to him. What I came to understand through this interview was that for the majority of the Republican politicians currently serving in Congress, it was never about country.
Hunter was remarkably candid, and some of the most revealing moments came in places I wasn’t expecting. At the end, I was left with far more to think about than I had anticipated, including a perspective on Trump, the Biden family and politics in America that I hadn’t fully considered before.
