Just a week ago, sitting inside Tesla’s Gigafactory for an interview with The Economist, the richest man alive offered what sounded like a confession. “I think I got a little too involved in politics,” Elon Musk said. “I got carried away, frankly.” He said the same thing last year, telling Bloomberg he planned to do “a lot less” political spending because he had “done enough.” But here we are, 96 days before the midterms, learning that Musk’s America PAC plans to spend up to $120 million across eight battleground states. After saying he got carried away, he is not stepping back. He is diving back in. His money is flowing right back to Trump and the Republican Party.
For Musk, this was never really about patriotism. It is about survival. Asked in 2024 what would happen to him if Trump lost, he said plainly, “If he loses, I’m f---ed. How long do you think my prison sentence is going to be?” He admitted he had “no plausible deniability.” His methods have drawn legal scrutiny before, from the million-dollar voter giveaways the DOJ warned could break federal law, to the Wisconsin elections board finding probable cause he may have violated the state’s bribery statute. Now his PAC has a detailed plan of funding ground operations, door-knocking, and ads in states like Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, and Ohio, all aimed at turning out conservative base voters who usually skip midterms. Even before his contributions, Republican super PACs already held a roughly $300 million advantage, with Trump’s own MAGA Inc. holding another $400 million.
This is not new to our country. Before the 17th Amendment, senators were chosen by state legislatures, and the robber barons of the Gilded Age simply bought them, controlling entire state governments with industrial money until the American people amended the Constitution to take it back. When enough money enters a system without accountability, it stops being a democracy and starts being an auction. Right now, Trump is auctioning off our government, and Musk is bidding to buy it. Thankfully, his name is toxic. In Wisconsin last year, he poured money in and his candidate lost, with his involvement becoming a liability. A Gallup poll out yesterday found 78 percent of Americans are worried about exactly this kind of anonymous money in politics. Musk has more money than we will ever see, and still does not have the stubborn, relentless conviction of millions who show up not because they were paid, but because they refuse to let this country be sold. We are 96 days out. And no fortune on earth is big enough to take this country from us.
