Yesterday evening, a Washington Post investigation revealed a truth the administration has been hiding for over a month. On July 8th, flying home from Turkey, American intelligence identified a credible Iranian threat against the President and Air Force One. So officials devised an elaborate operation. Trump was filmed boarding the plane, then secretly exited through a door on the opposite side, was lowered to the tarmac inside an airport catering truck, and driven to another aircraft. Meanwhile, White House reporters and staff were boarded onto the original plane, told to close their window shades without explanation, believing the president was traveling with them. No one told them he was gone. No one told them the aircraft they were sitting in had been designated, in a U.S. official’s own word, as a decoy. The plane broadcast the call sign “AF1” the entire flight, with a target on it, and them inside.
And then came the cruelest part. After landing, Trump was transferred back to the original plane and staged a descent down its stairs for the cameras, as though he had been aboard all along. Then, speaking to those same reporters, he joked, “I’m number one on their list, before you,” and, “But if I go, you go.” He said that to their faces, knowing he had secretly used them to draw a threat away from himself. He was never in danger of “going” with them. That was the entire point of the operation. Presidents deserve protection, and no one disputes that. But protection does not require deceiving the people being placed in danger and denying them the choice to accept that risk. And when the truth started leaking, the administration went after the New York Times reporters getting close to it with subpoenas. They hid this for a month because they knew what it revealed: a man who will always protect himself at any cost and leave everyone else behind.
And that same pattern, casting aside experts and endangering others, played out again this afternoon, when Trump signed an executive order slashing the recommended childhood vaccine schedule from 18 vaccines to 11 and splitting the MMR vaccine into three separate shots, despite no new science, no new study, and no new data of any kind. He called the MMR vaccine “quite lethal.” It has more than 50 years of safety data. There is no standalone measles vaccine even available in this country, and this is already the worst measles year since 1991, with two children dead. Every major medical institution condemned it. Even Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, the doctor whose vote moved forward the confirmation of RFK Jr., posted, “This executive order is wrong. Vaccines DO NOT cause autism.” The cruelest part is that the order does nothing for autistic people or their families. It exploits them as a scare tactic. We are on the verge of either a complete authoritarian takeover or one of the greatest democratic comebacks in modern history. Some of our darkest days have brought our greatest victories. That can happen again, starting in November.
