At 11:51 in the morning, Donald Trump led Xi Jinping and their wives up the red-carpet-lined stairs of the National Archives. Inside, they stood before the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. But the president’s remarks were about how old the documents were and what a great building housed them. Nothing about the freedom of the press, the right to vote, or the limits those documents place on presidential power. Hours later, he posted a photograph of himself beside Xi on the White House balcony with the caption “America is back.” I stared at that picture trying to understand how standing as an equal beside an authoritarian leader was supposed to represent a renewal of our democratic republic. Then I looked back at the rest of the day: government-labeled ads warning Americans about communism, new threats to voting access, and yet another attack on the reporters trying to show us what this administration is doing.
The contradiction could hardly be clearer. While Trump celebrated his relationship with China’s communist leader, ads labeled “Paid for by the U.S. Government” told his own followers to fear communism here at home. Many have raised legal concerns, and the White House would not identify which agency paid. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court allowed the administration to resume using the SAVE database to check voter rolls against immigration records after a lower court had blocked it. County clerks in Missouri warned that citizens they personally knew were being flagged. The danger is that an eligible voter may not discover a problem until arriving to vote. The press is facing its own barriers: even after a court ordered access restored, journalists were excluded from the state dinner, and CNN was pulled from the next Air Force One trip. These are different ways of making it harder for Americans to see clearly and make their voices count.
The fear is also being aimed inward. Trump’s PAC sent supporters emails saying they had been “AUDITED,” that their files were flagged, and that their loyalty required action. At the same time, The Atlantic reported that his longtime friend Peter Ticktin was discussing martial law as a possible election scenario, while Wayne Allyn Root publicly pushed an emergency declaration. Those are proposals from allies, and they deserve our attention. We cannot let that fear exhaust us into surrender. We check our voter registration, keep checking it, learn our provisional ballot options, and help the people around us prepare. We support the journalists and independent writers this administration wants to silence, share their reporting, and counter disinformation. An educated, empowered public is what this movement fears. Keeping that public informed and able to participate is work we can do every day.
