A little information for you. To prevent a fast-curing polyurea-polyurethane hybrid like Rhino Linings Pipeliner 5000 from peeling or bubbling on concrete, strict adhesion protocols must be followed. Because these elastomeric systems cure in seconds and exert high shrinkage stress as they snap-cure, they will quickly pull away from poorly prepared surfaces.According to industrial coating best practices and technical guidelines from Rhino Linings and the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI), the surface preparation requirements include:1. Mechanical Profiling (The "Tooth")Required CSP Rating: The concrete must be mechanically roughened to a Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) of 3 to 5 (resembling coarse sandpaper).Approved Methods: This profile must be achieved via shot blasting or abrasive blast cleaning. Smooth concrete, hand-grinding, or simple acid etching does not provide enough mechanical "tooth" for heavy-build polyurea coatings to bond permanently.Laitance Removal: All laitance (the weak, milky layer of cement dust on top of concrete) must be entirely blasted away to expose the sound aggregate underneath.2. Moisture and Climate ControlsMoisture Vapor Transmission (MVT): Concrete continuously breathes out moisture. If a 100% solids, non-breathable membrane like Pipeliner 5000 is sprayed over damp concrete, rising moisture will trap underneath, creating vapor pressure that causes massive blistering and peeling. Substrates must pass an ASTM F1869 calcium chloride test or an ASTM F2170 relative humidity test.Dew Point Restrictions: The coating must only be applied when the substrate temperature is at least 5°F (3°C) above the dew point to prevent microscopic condensation from forming on the concrete during spraying.3. Decontamination & SoundnessChemical Cleanliness: The substrate must be 100% free of oils, grease, curing compounds, algae, old paint, and form-release agents.Substrate Strength: The underlying concrete must be structurally sound, possessing a minimum compressive strength of 3,626 psi and a minimum tensile pull-off strength of 218 psi (1.5 MPa) under ASTM C1583 testing. If the concrete itself is weak, the polyurea will simply tear the top layer of concrete off.4. Priming (The Critical Anchor)Because polyurea sets up in 5 seconds, it does not have time to penetrate the pores of concrete before solidifying.To prevent peeling, an epoxy primer (such as Rhino 1500 Clear Epoxy Primer) must be applied first. The thin epoxy penetrates deep into the concrete pores, seals off outgassing, and creates a chemical binding layer for the Pipeliner 5000 to fuse to.
