Last Thursday, on a little-known Canadian podcast, one of the loudest voices in American right-wing media said something that would have been unthinkable not long ago. Tucker Carlson announced he was leaving the Republican Party. “I’m out,” he said. “And if I’m out, then I think a lot of other people are out.” But this is no profile in courage. Carlson is not a hero or a truth-teller. He campaigned for Trump in 2024, after the insurrection, the indictments, and the verdict finding Trump liable for sexual abuse. And during the Dominion lawsuit, his own private texts revealed that he hated Trump “passionately,” called him “demonic,” and admitted the election fraud claims were baseless, all while defending him on air every night. He always knew. He said it anyway, because it was profitable to pretend. The only thing that changed is that pretending is no longer profitable.
This is what happens when authoritarian coalitions begin to fail. They do not fracture because the people inside wake up to the evil. They fracture because the people inside realize the evil is about to cost them personally. When Mussolini’s own Grand Council voted to remove him in 1943, it was not moral clarity. It was self-preservation. More than thirty House Republicans have already announced they won’t seek reelection. The influencers are walking it back one by one as the numbers turn. But there is a real danger in what comes next. Carlson did not cross the aisle. He stepped away while keeping his options open, and the talk of his own presidential ambitions is growing. If Trump is the wrecking ball, Carlson is the architect, articulate, disciplined, and capable of making extremism sound reasonable. A Carlson presidency would not be Trumpism falling apart. It would be Trumpism growing up.
But the real story today was not Tucker Carlson finding his conscience, because he didn’t. It was that three federal judges, on the same day, all ruled against this administration. One struck down a centralized database being used to wrongfully purge American citizens from the voter rolls. Another, a conservative Bush appointee and former Scalia clerk, quashed grand jury subpoenas targeting Minnesota officials, calling it “a blatantly unlawful and unethical use of the grand-jury process.” A third blocked the administration’s attempt to rewrite the definition of food to strip benefits from 42 million Americans. Three times in one day, the courts said the same thing: you do not get to rewrite the law because it doesn’t align with your agenda. The coalition is splintering from within while the courts hold the line. Every crack buys us time to get to November. And even the people who built this machine now see that it cannot hold.
