Just before noon, Donald Trump was at the Presidents Cup outside Chicago, talking about the “nice reception” he was receiving when a heckler interrupted him on live television. It came a day after the boos at the Tennessee-Texas football game, while hundreds of protesters gathered outside Medinah. He can keep telling us the country is doing better than ever, but if that were true, we would feel it in our lives. His administration would not need to spend our money convincing us. During the Illinois-Ohio State game, viewers saw a black-and-white ad of Trump walking down a hallway, accompanied by recycled campaign audio declaring, “This is the final battle.” The closing words identified who was paying: “Paid for by the U.S. Government.” According to AdImpact, the first of these ads had already cost $430,000 as of Friday; the second had cost more than $362,000. Those figures are already likely to have grown. Our money is paying to promote the president just weeks before the midterms.
Even Republican Senator John Kennedy said public officials should not spend public money on private ads for themselves. The White House calls them educational, patriotic public service announcements, while lawmakers from both parties and legal experts have challenged their use of taxpayer funds. I immediately thought of Viktor Orban and the propaganda his government called information campaigns, including ads during soccer matches. But what makes Trump’s ad so disturbing is what he says he wants to finish. Listen to the promises one by one: demolish the deep state, expel the warmongers, drive out the globalists, target his political enemies, and rout the press. We have already seen federal workers pushed out, USAID dismantled, national security officials purged, and international partnerships abandoned. We have watched him turn the Justice Department against opponents and restrict access for news organizations that challenge him. Those words are a warning about how much further he intends to go.
The phrase that matters most is “once and for all.” That is a statement about permanent, unchecked power, about controlling what Americans see and hear and turning elections into an illusion of choice. Trump is not on the ballot this November, but the limits on his power are at stake. We still have time to make our voices heard. Talk to the people in your life so they understand the importance of the midterm elections this year.
