Donald Trump told a female reporter to be “quiet,” replaced CNN on his Tennessee trip with LindellTV and Real America’s Voice, and then announced, “I love an open, free press.” That is where this day began. MS NOW’s Akayla Gardner had asked whether he only wanted supportive outlets in the White House press pool. He responded by calling her network fake news. Hours later, he was in a glass-shielded suite at Neyland Stadium, smiling and pumping his fist as the boos swallowed the cheers. Before kickoff, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian had already warned that the president’s movements through the stadium could disrupt team communications. Tennessee lost 20-17, and people were once again talking about the Trump curse. But the damage we need to confront goes far beyond a football game. A president who wants to choose which reporters can question him is trying to choose what the rest of us get to hear.
Even Canada is being forced to plan around the instability coming from this White House. Mark Carney told The New York Times that his government had studied the extreme possibility of American military action against Canada, saying it would be irresponsible not to prepare. That does not mean Canada believes an attack is certain. It means our closest neighbor is considering a danger that should be unimaginable while building partnerships with countries it can rely on. Meanwhile, Trump spent hours posting economic boasts, eventually declaring that we have the “BEST FINANCIAL NUMBERS EVER.” The American Research Group numbers tell a very different story: 72% say the economy is getting worse, only 6% expect improvement over the next year, and his economic approval stands at 26%. Repeating that everything is wonderful will not change what people can afford, and blaming Joe Biden will not make this someone else’s economy.
Nate Silver’s latest model gives Democrats an 87 percent chance of winning the House and a 59 percent chance of taking the Senate, but those possibilities still depend on people showing up. Trump is not personally on the midterm ballot. His attacks on journalists, his administration’s decisions, and the power Congress has allowed him are. If we turn frustration into turnout and flip Congress, we can begin the investigations and accountability this country needs. We cannot repeat the assumption that an outcome is so obvious we can afford to stay home.
