Trump is trying to take away our FREE SPEECH
The FCC issued a letter yesterday that takes eight ABC broadcast station licenses, not due for renewal until 2028, and effectively makes them due in thirty days. The official justification is DEI practices. Nobody believes that. This is about Jimmy Kimmel. Because Donald Trump has publicly demanded that Kimmel be fired, and the FCC chairman told a podcast seven months ago exactly what was coming: “We can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to take action on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.” Kimmel made a joke about the age difference between the president and the First Lady. Three days later, a shooting happened at the Correspondents’ Dinner. And the White House decided Kimmel was to blame. The First Lady called it “hateful and violent rhetoric.” The Communications Director called him “a shit human being” on his official government account. And now the FCC is using the full weight of federal regulatory power to force the network’s hand.
The same day that letter arrived, James Comey was indicted for the second time. His crime: posting a photo of seashells on a beach arranged in the numbers 86 and 47. He deleted it the same day and said he hadn’t realized the numbers were associated with violence. “86” is one of the oldest pieces of American slang, meaning to get rid of something, the word you use when you cut someone off at a bar. The maximum sentence: twenty years. His first indictment was already thrown out by a federal judge. They built a new case, found a new grand jury, and came back. Comey posted a video titled “Seashells” and said, “I’m still innocent. I’m still not afraid. And I still believe in the independent federal judiciary. So let’s go.”
Authoritarians always go after the comedians. In 1939, Goebbels ended the careers of five German comedians who joked about Hitler. When Putin came to power, one of his first targets was Russia’s most popular satirical show. The network was seized through state-controlled Gazprom, and the show’s creator now lives in exile in Warsaw. Stephen Colbert called Paramount’s settlement with Trump “a big fat bribe,” and CBS canceled his show three days later. Trump celebrated on Truth Social and added, “I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next.” They are not going after comedians because jokes are dangerous. They are going after them because laughter punctures the myth of power. And a strongman who is being laughed at by millions of people every night cannot maintain the illusion that he is untouchable.
