Trump is completely unfit for the job, and yesterday made it undeniable

After days of hiding from the press while a giant UFC cage was being assembled on the South Lawn of the White House, the President of the United States took a reporter’s phone call, and his lack of impulse control got the better of him. Asked about the collapsing negotiations over the war he started, he shrugged it off entirely: “I really don’t care. I couldn’t care less,” because the talks had “started to get very boring.” A deadly war that has destabilized an entire region, rattled the global economy, and endangered American troops, and his response was that he was bored with it. The only energy he summoned was a threat to “blow them up to kingdom come.” Indifference on one end and annihilation on the other, with no strategy, no diplomacy, and no grasp of the thing he set in motion.

Just hours earlier, he had posted on Truth Social that “talks are continuing, at a rapid pace.” Within a single morning, those rapid-paced talks became too boring to follow. Both statements came from the same man, about the same war, on the same day. He was not informing us. He was performing for us. And he was not following the negotiations closely enough to know which version of reality he was supposed to be selling. He told a reporter he was “going to ask” Netanyahu what was happening in Lebanon, and then, an hour later, posted that he had personally brokered a ceasefire on every front that might last “for ETERNITY.” The only problem is that the people actually fighting the war had not agreed to any of it. Netanyahu publicly contradicted him. His defense minister denied there was any ceasefire at all. Trump declared victory before there was a victory to declare.

But while Trump held nothing together today, the rest of the country did. His $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund, the one critics warned could reward the very people who attacked the Capitol, was shelved. After a federal judge temporarily blocked it, Republicans in Congress balked, holding their own funding package hostage until it was dealt with. By the end of the day, an administration official described the fund in three words: “Dead for now.” It is not finished, and there is a hearing on June 12 that could decide the rest. But it moved in the right direction because people pushed. That is what friction looks like when the guardrails are made of people who still do their jobs, even when the man at the top has stopped doing his.
