Standing beside a guided-missile destroyer docked in Panama, the Secretary of Defense dismissed reports of harrowing conditions aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln as “completely misrepresented.” But the sailors aboard that ship are telling a very different story. What was supposed to be a routine seven-month Pacific deployment was redirected to the Middle East in January as Trump prepared for his war with Iran, and it has now stretched to nine months away from home. The Lincoln went 208 consecutive days at sea without a single day in port, longer than any aircraft carrier in the modern era, with five straight months of near-constant combat. Families describe food shortages so severe one sailor said his meal was half a cup of rice and two tortillas. Moldy showers, broken toilets, weeks without hot water, mail that simply stopped arriving. And Pete Hegseth’s response was not to fix any of it, but to reassure the country that this blockade could be maintained “indefinitely.”
The human cost is heartbreaking. Multiple sailors aboard the Lincoln have tried to jump overboard. One wife said her husband is now on medical hold after attempting to jump, terrified his 13-year career is ruined simply because he was burned out. On August 3rd, a sailor did go over the side, spending nearly an hour in the water before a helicopter rescued him. The Navy did not contact his wife for four days. She found out from a friend on the ship, and accused the Navy of trying to cover it up. This is not the first time Hegseth waved this away. Back in April, when families first shared photos of half-empty trays with gray slabs of meat, he called it “fake news.” Four months later, that same crew is trying to jump off the ship. Here in San Diego, 200 family members packed a banquet room to confront Navy leadership, one saying her husband had messaged that same day that he “hopes he does not wake up tomorrow.”
But in the middle of this crisis, a beam of light broke through in an unexpected place. Military families spoke out. That is not an easy thing to do, because speaking publicly about a deployed ship can carry real consequences for a spouse’s career, the next assignment, the next promotion. They did it anyway, giving their real names, telling their stories to reporters. And because of them, the pressure worked: the Pentagon is now sending the USS George Washington to relieve the Lincoln. One of those voices was Nicole Conrad, a mother of a sailor on the ship, who voted for Trump and now says he “put our nose in a war that we shouldn’t be in,” telling Hegseth to go visit the ship himself. There is no partisan version of supporting the troops that treats them this way.
