Donald Trump is a coward

This evening, at 6:53 EDT, an investigation was published that revealed the truth about a very serious situation that occurred over a month ago while Trump was flying back from Turkey. A moment so morally indefensible that the Trump administration has been deliberately hiding it from the American People. Back on July 8th, while the President of the United States was on his return trip from Turkey, he committed a stunning act of deception to protect himself while intentionally placing those he swore an oath to protect in the path of a very real threat. He even went so far as to use them as decoys without their knowledge or consent, and we only learned the truth about it today, after a Washington Post report by national security correspondent John Hudson was released.

To provide more context, this is what I wrote about that flight back on July 8th: At 3:43 p.m. local time in Turkey, the President of the United States grabbed the stairs to his plane with his swollen right hand while his bruised left hand hung motionless at his side. This was not the plane he had arrived on, his newly refurbished Qatari Air Force One, but instead the older presidential aircraft he had used before. The change was sudden and unexpected, and multiple reports indicated it was related to security concerns with Iran, even as Trump denied that was the reason while simultaneously contradicting himself, telling reporters traveling with him that they were “on a dangerous flight,” and, “I’m number one on their list, before you,” before adding, “But if I go, you go. Perhaps someday you want to change professions.”

At the time, those words were disturbing enough. The President of the United States appeared to be joking with the reporters traveling alongside him about the possibility that Iran could kill all of them together. It was cruel and reckless, but it sounded like exactly the kind of thing we have become accustomed to hearing from Donald Trump.

Except now we know something that those reporters did not know as he was saying those words to them. Donald Trump had not been on the first part of that “dangerous” flight with them. He had secretly gotten off the plane and left them all behind as the decoy.

When Trump was talking to those reporters, he had already taken steps to protect himself from what American intelligence believed was a serious enough threat that an elaborate operation had been carried out to conceal which aircraft he was actually flying on. When he joked, “If I go, you go,” he knew the entire purpose of that operation had been to make sure that if someone came for him, he would not be the one on the plane, “to go.” They would.

He was standing safely in front of them, pretending he had shared their danger, joking about dying together, after secretly using them to help draw attention away from the aircraft carrying him. It is hard to get past the cruelty of what he said.

This was not just a president receiving extraordinary protection from the Secret Service. That is not in dispute. Presidents should be protected. If intelligence officials believed there was a credible threat against the President of the United States, they had an obligation to protect him. The disturbing part is what happened to everyone else. Reporters and White House staff were boarded onto that aircraft and were reportedly told to close their window shades without explanation, believing the president was still traveling with them, even as he was secretly moved onto another plane. Then, after he was safe, he joked to their faces about the possibility that they could have been killed while he had secretly been moved to another plane for them to face the threat alone.

The Washington Post report revealed how deep this deception went. On July 7th, Trump arrived in Turkey on the newly renovated Boeing 747-8 donated to him by Qatar, marking the plane’s first international presidential trip. By the next day, when Trump was set to fly back to Washington, American intelligence officials had identified a credible Iranian threat against him and Air Force One.

With this threat in mind, officials devised an elaborate plan starting within minutes of Trump being filmed boarding his older Air Force One. Once onboard, he and several aides exited through a door on the opposite side of the aircraft, out of sight of anyone not involved in the operation. They stepped into an airport catering truck, the kind normally used to load food and supplies onto planes using hydraulics. They used the truck to lower the President of the United States to the ground, and then they drove him across the tarmac to an Air Force C-32A, a modified Boeing 757 typically reserved as Air Force Two. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth boarded the C-32A separately using external stairs, designed to make the smaller plane’s activity look routine and as a justification for it being there and in use.

Meanwhile, members of the White House press corps and some White House staff boarded the older Air Force One believing Trump was traveling with them. They were instructed to close their window shades before departure. No one told them the president was no longer on the plane, and no one told them the aircraft they were sitting in had been designated as a decoy, a word used by a U.S. official in describing the operation to the Washington Post. The presidential 747 took off and eventually began broadcasting the call sign “AF1” on flight tracking systems, even though Trump was not aboard. The aircraft he was on used the nondescript military call sign “Reach 18.”

Trump’s C-32A arrived at RAF Mildenhall in Britain at approximately 10:20 p.m. local time. The decoy plane carrying the reporters and staff landed nine minutes later. And then, as the final piece of the ploy, Trump was transferred back to the older Air Force One. At approximately 10:56 p.m., he appeared before television cameras descending the external stairs of the 747, as though he had been on it the entire time. The White House posted a photograph of the aircraft and publicly maintained that the president had traveled from Turkey aboard the legacy Air Force One. They maintained that lie for over a month.

After that show for the press, he and everyone traveling with him then boarded his new Qatari AF1 for the rest of the flight home. This is when he spoke to reporters for about 15 minutes and said those outlandish words where he pretended to have been on the plane with them. There is a reason the administration hid this for a month. They knew what it would look like. They knew the image of the President of the United States hiding inside a food cart while other people flew on a plane marked as his would not look good. They knew it would make him look weak and cowardly. It would show the world that he will always protect himself at any cost and leave everyone else behind without a second thought. And they knew it would raise the question: what else are we not being told?

Continuation of government and keeping the president protected must always be a priority. But protection does not require deception of the people being placed in danger. Those reporters and staff members were put on an aircraft that was functioning as a target, and they were not given the choice to accept that risk. When the truth started leaking last month, and the New York Times reported on security concerns with the Qatari aircraft, the administration took the cover-up even deeper. Jay Clayton, Trump’s then-Manhattan U.S. Attorney, who has since been appointed Director of National Intelligence, had subpoenas issued against the New York Times reporters who had written about those concerns. They went after the journalists who were getting close to the truth.

This was not the only time today that we saw this pattern of Donald Trump making decisions that put other people in danger.

This afternoon, standing with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other officials, Trump signed an executive order that reduces the number of recommended childhood vaccines from 18 to 11, along with splitting the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine into three separate shots given at separate medical visits. He called it the “Gold Standard Childhood Vaccination Recommendations,” and he said it had to do with “many subjects, but including autism in particular.”

Medical professionals immediately voiced grave concern. Many noted that there is no standalone measles vaccine currently available in the United States, and the American Academy of Pediatrics estimates it would take more than a decade to develop one.

Trump gave a vast array of nonsensical comments during this executive order signing. Among them, he said, “Very simply: Large amounts of vaccine, large amounts of, like vats, of vaccine are currently pumped into your child’s body.” He compared the volume of a vaccine given to children to “the size of a bottle of soda.” A standard childhood vaccine dose is a small fraction of a teaspoon. He called the combined MMR vaccine “quite lethal.” The MMR vaccine has been proven safe through large-scale studies conducted over more than 50 years. And then he said: “Nothing bad can happen from what we’re doing. Nothing bad can happen.” But we know that is not true. Two children have died from measles in the United States in just the past year. Bad things are already happening because of the disinformation he is spreading about vaccines.

Before the measles vaccine existed, four to five hundred people died from measles every year in this country, and some 48,000 were hospitalized. The vaccine brought those numbers close to zero, with measles being declared eliminated in the United States in 2000 because vaccination rates were high enough to stop the disease from spreading. That protection is now at risk. Measles cases in 2026 have already surpassed all of 2025, with 2,465 cases and 38 new outbreaks as of early August, compared to 2,289 cases for the full year of 2025. This is the worst year for measles since 1991. And today, as children are already getting sick at rates not seen in 35 years, the president told parents that the vaccine that can protect their children is “quite lethal.”

It’s important to note that this executive order is not based on any new science or evidence. There has been no new study or discovery. No scientific breakthrough or new data of any kind has emerged to justify or initiate this change. Dr. Andrew Racine, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, told reporters that parents will come to their children’s doctors wanting to know whether anything has changed in the science. “And the answer to that is no,” he said. “The science of vaccines and their efficacy has not changed.” He went further in a formal statement, calling the order “not only disheartening but dangerous,” and added, “Instead of ensuring every family can access life-saving vaccines for measles, influenza, RSV and more, federal leaders are once again spreading misleading claims.”

Dr. Aaron Milstone, also from the American Academy of Pediatrics, said, “Why would we not give children a vaccine that is safe that prevents death? We had two healthy children die in the United States in the last year from measles virus. So we’re suggesting that you continue to give children a vaccine that has decades of safety data.”

Dr. Jan K. Carney, president of the American College of Physicians, called the order “part of a troubling pattern by the administration to attempt to unilaterally change vaccine guidance, particularly for children, rather than relying on the transparent, scientific review that has guided the U.S. childhood vaccine schedule for decades.”

Dr. Richard Besser, a pediatrician and former acting director of the CDC, said: “What we’re seeing now is the injection of politics into something that should be a very personal conversation between a parent and their child’s doctor.”

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, a medical doctor, the chairman of the Senate health committee, and the man whose deciding vote confirmed Kennedy to the HHS post in the first place, posted on social media: “I’m a doctor. This executive order is wrong. The President does not have the expertise to make these changes. Vaccines are overwhelmingly safe. Vaccines are effective. Vaccines DO NOT cause autism. Breaking up vaccines will mean children have to get more shots to get the same protection, not fewer shots. It will increase hesitancy and make children less safe. Parents should listen to their child’s pediatrician about vaccines rather than listening to an inaccurate executive order. This is so wrong.”

It’s important to note that Bill Cassidy has had ample opportunities to stop or slow Trump and his administration, or at least slow down the destruction they are unleashing, and Cassidy always ends up saying one thing and doing another. This is on him just as much as it is on Trump and RFK Jr.

Donald Trump does not even believe this about vaccines. In the past he has said, “pure and simple,” vaccines work. He called the polio vaccine “amazing” and praised some vaccines as “so incredible.” He, himself, is vaccinated, and he is the one who spearheaded Operation Warp Speed in 2020. Children will get sick and worse because of Donald Trump, who once again couldn’t even stay awake for the entire 41-minute signing.

We are in grave danger. Our children and grandchildren are in grave danger from this administration. Donald Trump keeps casting aside the experts. The military and intelligence professionals warned him about Iran. They told him this was not a regime that responds to threats the way he thinks everyone does. Iran operates on a fundamentally different understanding of sacrifice and martyrdom. They will die for a cause. You cannot bully them. The experts told him that and he ignored them. And now he is hiding in catering carts because the consequences came for him personally.

The medical experts told him vaccines are overwhelmingly safe and effective, with serious adverse reactions extremely rare and far less dangerous than the diseases the vaccines prevent. Every major medical institution in the country is saying the same thing tonight: talk to your child’s pediatrician. Not the president or a political appointee. The doctor who knows your child, who has studied this for years, who took an oath to do no harm. That is who should be guiding these decisions. Because of this recklessness, we are now going to see more people die from vaccine-preventable diseases that we conquered decades ago.

And the cruelest part of all of this is what it does to autistic people and their families. This executive order does not help a single autistic person. It does not fund services or expand support for families navigating that reality every day. It does not invest in research to help autistic people live their best lives. That is where the resources and the attention should be going. Into understanding and supporting autistic individuals and the families who love them and care for them. Autistic families need real help. They need funding and services. They need a government that sees them as people who deserve investment, not as political pawns.

This order exploits them. It uses autism as a scare tactic to justify stripping protections from children. Vaccines do not cause autism, just like Tylenol does not cause autism. Every time this administration repeats that lie, it disrespects every autistic person in this country and makes them a target.

The stakes have never been so high as they are right now. Our country is on the verge of a complete authoritarian takeover or the beginning of one of the greatest democratic comebacks in modern history. I’m angry tonight, and I’m sad. But I know that some of our darkest days have brought some of our greatest victories, and I believe that will happen again now. That is why I still have hope for America. And you should, too.
