I, too, am proud to be an American. One who believes in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. One who believe in freedom for all, not just the few who have the money to buy it. One who believes that every person has a God-given right to achieve the best that he or she can be. One who believes that government exists to support the freedom of each citizen to be the best that they can be, and does not suppress the rights and freedoms of those whose bank accounts don't contain multiple zeros after each $1. We can do this, America. We can live up to the ideals of the Founding Fathers and those who fought against slavery and fascism around the world. We can do this!

What a beautifully written piece. Your description of true Americans as those walking towards the flames carrying water for others is exactly what I needed to hear now. Thank you.

Wow, Heather. Like many I follow on here, I have no idea how I found you. But I sure am glad. You write with such eloquence and clarity. Another voice of reason and truth, managing to be real and soothingly hopeful at the same time. I love this: "being American was never supposed to be easy. It was supposed to be a promise, fragile, imperfect, and worth fighting for". Thank you for what you are doing here!
