Today, at 10:31 a.m. Eastern Time in Washington, D.C., the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing had already been underway for more than two hours when a relatively unknown Republican senator from Ohio, Bernie Moreno, erupted at the microphone.
"Who the fuck do you think you were for doing that? It is a total disgrace, what you did to this country," he shouted after recounting the story of a mother who had been arrested nearly six years earlier after refusing to comply with a local mask requirement while attending a middle-school football game during the global pandemic. His uncontrolled outburst should have been directed at the woman who knowingly broke the law. Instead, it was aimed at Dr. Anthony Fauci, the infectious disease physician who helped guide America through the deadliest public health crisis in more than a century while serving under President Donald J. Trump.
Note to Bernie Moreno: the woman wasn’t arrested for failing to wear a mask, she was arrested for failing to comply with school policy and leave the football game when told to by a police officer. It was after she had been told she needed to leave when she began resisting arrest and another woman joined in. She was told by the officer that she was trespassing and if she continued to resist then she would be tased and escorted out.
Dr Fauci wasn’t even around when she resisted and refused to leave the game. So why were you yelling at him?
If you are going to lie and make false claims about what happened Congressman, please don’t do it in a Congressional hearing where members of Congress should be required to tell the truth when questioning someone. I was a former teacher and one of the last things we needed back in 2020 was parents setting a bad example for our students by refusing to comply with school policies in the middle of an emotionally charged event.
If there was someone sitting at a game holding an unsealed Petri dish filled with coronavirus and waving it around in the air, would you expect him to leave the game?

The Covid epidemic caught the whole world by surprise and I guess every country reacted differently. Here in the UK we only needed to wear masks inside and had to queue up outside supermarkets and were only allowed in a few at a time. I cannot recollect whether sporting events were cancelled or not. I received my first shot in January 2021.

I too saw the Fauci farce yesterday and was mortified at how low the country’s representations in Congress have fallen. It is as though these men (mostly men) and women have separated themselves from their state‘s objectives only to follow their own and Mr Trump’s egotistical agenda. Perhaps Mr. Paul would have been far more satisfied drinking bleach as Trump suggested, as a remedy to shield the country from COVID. Mr. Fauci along with scientists from all over the world, worked in unison to bring the infection to a close. Mr. Paul has a vendetta against scientists simply because he will never be one of them. He is a wannabe and like the now head of DOH a charlatan who is puffing himself up for a Trumpian pat on the head. If this insanity continues, the USA will reach the dangerous point of no return. The slippery slope becomes steeper day by day, but unfortunately it has not reached the stage which causes the majority to awaken and reverse the course.

Dr. Fauci is a hero for many reasons, not the least of which is bravely standing up to vicious attacks with dignity and with truth on his side.
Any sane American knows that this is yet another distraction tactic...these Senators must not have anything better to do...Josh Hawley, yet again, embarrassed himself trying to be a preening peacock... if I were Bernie Moreno, I would be more worried about my daughter and granddaughter than wasting time attacking Dr Fauci.

People see what they want to see and don't see what they should see. That's for a big part driven by their personal circumstances and interests. Not unique for the USA. I see it happening in my own country and when I talk to people i am regularly surprised how straightforward opinions can be without having much knowledge about the complexity of a subject and the facts. Without that you can be easily influenced. Like Nazi minister for propaganda Joseph Goebbels stated: "When you repeat lies often enough, they automatically become the truth".
Let's hope and pray that the midterms will this all turn around 180 degrees.
Do I get the impression that the Senator from Ohio is a puppet of the orange one? As you say his anger should have been targeted towards the woman who refused to wear a mask at a football game during the pandemic. The Covid epidemic caught the whole world by surprise and I guess every country reacted differently. Here in the UK we only needed to wear masks inside and had to queue up outside supermarkets and were only allowed in a few at a time. I cannot recollect whether sporting events were cancelled or not. I received my first shot in January 2021.

I could not agree more. Heather put together a powerful and eloquent argument in favor of a great American hero and an indictment of the Trumpian dystopia of our nation in its 250th year. If I was still teaching young college students I would give it my students without comment for their consideration of where we are now as a country and the roots we must all try to regain.
