Trump’s wildly erratic G7 speech shows a man in steep decline

At the G7 summit in France, the President of the United States stepped behind the podium with a lost look in his swollen eyes and, within seconds, was already struggling to catch his breath. For the next hour and eight minutes, he delivered what may be the most concerning press conference of his presidency, faltering over words, losing his train of thought, and struggling to understand questions asked only moments earlier, with flesh-colored makeup covering bruises and gashes on the backs of his hands. And in one of the most troubling moments, surrounded by the leaders of the world’s most powerful democracies gathered to discuss war and global instability, he chose to thank two of the most dangerous men alive. “I want to thank China, President Xi,” he said. “And I want to thank Vladimir Putin.” He even acknowledged how it sounded, then did it anyway.

The pattern was impossible to miss. He called India’s Modi “the most beautiful-looking man,” an “angel,” and “a killer,” all in the same breath. He described falling “deeply in love” with Egypt’s el-Sisi, a general who seized power in a coup. Xi, Putin, Modi, el-Sisi. Again and again, he was drawn to the same kind of leader: men with enormous power and few limits on it, the kind who never have to worry about being told no. In the middle of selling what he called historic peace, he admitted the Iran deal wasn’t final, threatening to go “right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head.” When asked why he agreed to end the war at all, the reason was not the nuclear weapons he used to justify starting it, or the soldiers, or the dead on either side. It was the stock market.

The leaders of the other nations in the G7 seemed to catch onto how to manage Trump. Germany presented him with a Trump 47 soccer jersey. Macron hosted a special dinner at Versailles for Trump. For now, the institutions and alliances are holding. The world has not closed the door on us. It is holding it open, watching to see whether we walk back through it as the nation we are still capable of being. The work between now and the midterms is to make sure we do.
