At 4:11 p.m. this afternoon, the President of the United States stood in the press cabin aboard Air Force One. With a tight grip on the door frame to keep himself upright as the plane rocked beneath him, he responded to a reporter's question in the most callous way imaginable. He had just come from Dover Air Force Base, where he stood as flag-draped caskets bearing American service members were carefully, one by one, carried past their families, and returned to American soil for the last time. And even after just experiencing such a gut-wrenching moment, the president had the audacity to say the war is going "unbelievably. As good as it can be."
While he stood braced in that doorway, a reporter had asked him directly:

I am incandescent with rage that Donald Trump as the audacity to put out the tweet about Prime Minister Starmer because he as our prime minister had the sense to hold back from taking our country into a war without careful consideration.
Unlike trump who on a boring night in front of the television decided it would be a good idea to start throwing bombs at Iran without warning to any of his allies.
He and Netanyahu are having a field day - Isreal is doing another land grab and throwing bombs in all directions and trump is boasting that he has won the war - wars cause deaths and bodies and hurt maiming and injury.
I am not condoning the sort of country that Iran is, but there has to be a better way of dealing with the situation than a killing field.
And then you have trump on the runway to see the dead servicemen coming back to USA , to their families, wearing a baseball cap - could he be more lacking in empathy and be more irreverent ?
Please tell me where Trumps opposition is - we hear so much from him and his mate Pete who seem drunk on the excitement of the bombs and death and look what we did when be torpedoed a defenceless ship !
In Uk we may not all be happy with what Starmer is doing or saying but a least he has a vocal opposition who we hear from, rightly he is challenged.
The problem is: what do we do? We have a system that has come to a fail point, that is, the GOP, who have been paid off by special interest for 50 years, coalescing in the federal government around Twump and his orders. We wait, wait, wait, for the elections so we can send Dems to Washington to overturn and push back against the GOPers who have decided it is worth it to stay in office to back Twump no matter what shit he throws our way.
It is frustrating to live in America right now. Back in the day, young people did not sit on their phones all day. They got out and yelled and screamed. Nowadays, they are too cocooned in their media world to do much but film themselves and when there are a million voices, no one breaks through. It's just a cacophony of voices yelling, "Me! Me! Me!" all day and all night.
The difference, besides the addiction of phones now, is that back in the 60s and 70s, young men were being drafted into a far away war that not many people supported. Now, if we had a draft, they might get off their phones, and their moms certainly would, for a minute, to express their discomfort with their baby boy being sent to war.
I wrote this earlier in response to Robert Reich’s essay. “For those that have witnessed the colossal death toll in the protracted Ukraine war, the devastation of Gaza (where the predominant casualties have been women and children), to now see a full on Middle East conflict is too much. This is Imperialistic expansionism. A Greater Israel, a Greater Russia and a Greater America. All without the consent of these countries peoples. Now is the time to say “No, not in my name!”. March, petition, boycott and, above all, vote!!”
Since then, we hear Tdump’s blatant lies about the missile strike on the girls school, Russia’s involvement etc,etc. His disrespect and disregard for those American Service personnel who have died and who may still die. He is a mobster and a monster!!
Thank you for this post. You walk us through the horrific events and lies of this government but you always find glimmers of hope. Our actions in response to these crimes are what will save our souls and the promise that began with our ancestors.
