Trump's war is pushing his most fanatical supporters away

Is MAGA Done?

At a luncheon on Capitol Hill, the President of the United States referred to deceased members of Congress with math. “They’re in heaven now. And that didn’t help us with the vote.” Earlier that day in the Oval Office, he made Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin wait 45 minutes, then spent 40 minutes attacking European allies and rambling about the war. But Martin came with a plan. He pushed back, defended allies on the record, and redirected Trump without him ever realizing what happened. It was the clearest contrast between a real leader and a man pretending to be one.

The war is becoming indefensible from within Trump’s own ranks. Joe Kent, the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, a Trump appointee and MAGA loyalist, resigned saying he “cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran.” Meanwhile, the man Trump put in charge of economic policy went on CNBC and told Americans that the financial pain from this war is “the last of our concerns right now.” Gas is up 80 cents. Oil is near $100 a barrel. And they told us it doesn’t matter to them.

But the courts are holding. A judge blocked RFK Jr.’s effort to gut childhood vaccine policy. Another ordered the reinstatement of 1,000 Voice of America employees. And Chief Justice John Roberts spoke publicly, calling the hostility directed at judges “dangerous.” When even the true believers inside this administration start breaking, it tells you the foundation is not as solid as they want us to believe.
