The President of the United States posted a graph comparing military deaths across America’s wars, dividing it into two columns labeled “Other Presidents” and “Trump,” red bars for the dead, blue bars for the length of each war. He ended with “Iran Military Conflict: 4 months, 18 DEAD,” presenting it as proof of his success because the number was lower than in previous wars. He formatted the deaths of more than one hundred thousand Americans into a basic infographic and placed his own name on the winning side. After service members were killed in Jordan, he spent the weekend golfing and attending the World Cup final. Sixty-eight percent of Americans now say this war is not worth fighting, worse numbers than Iraq or Afghanistan ever had.
But the story that faded into the background noise may matter most. Trump Media announced a new paid service giving Wall Street trading firms millisecond-early access to Truth Social posts from the highest-ranking accounts, including the president’s, before the public sees them. It launches next month and already has paying customers. His posts move oil prices and defense stocks. Billions of dollars respond instantly to his words. And now his own company, in which he remains the largest shareholder, is selling early access to presidential announcements. What people were already suspected of doing illegally is now being sold as a product.
Historian Timothy Snyder warned that this administration may be hoping for, or willing to manufacture, an act of terror on American soil. It is a warning worth taking seriously, because the infrastructure is already built: an armed federal force with billions in funding, a captured high court, hollowed-out independent agencies, and elections under active assault. The only thing still missing is a moment to exploit. But there are glimmers. A federal judge in Miami just ruled that Trump’s own revocable trust must surrender detailed financial records to the BBC as part of the $10 billion lawsuit he filed to bully them into silence. His team had produced 735 pages, described as a “sham production” of internet articles, while the BBC turned over 87,000. He tried to weaponize the courts against the free press, and the courts turned it around on him. His own lawsuit is now forcing his financial records into the light. He is not untouchable.
