At 2:37 in the afternoon, a visibly frail President of the United States made his way slowly to the Rose Garden podium for a back-to-school event. But before he said a single word about education, he talked about the $400 million ballroom he is building to impress China’s President Xi. When he finally turned to the children seated in front of him, he used the moment to repeat the debunked claim linking vaccines to autism, telling them they’re requesting parents get “five different shots” so their “beautiful little bodies can handle it.” This is the same man who launched Operation Warp Speed and demanded credit for it.
Vaccines were only one of the enemies he manufactured from that podium. He went after trans children, teachers, and critical race theory, then accidentally admitted what it has always been about when he said he hopes Democrats keep defending trans athletes because it makes it “impossible to win a race, politically.” This is what a leader does when he is terrified of losing power: he manufactures enemies out of the vulnerable and hopes fear will keep enough of the country behind him. First it was immigrants, then Mexico, then Greenland, then Zelenskyy, then Iran, then vaccines, then teachers and trans children. And now, Canada, a close ally and one of our largest trading partners, suddenly recast as an enemy over nothing. When one target stops producing enough fear, he finds another, because keeping us angry at each other is how he keeps us from turning our anger toward him.
He threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian vehicles and steel to 50 percent, called Prime Minister Carney a “clown,” mocked Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s late brother, and threatened to cut off Canada’s energy. Ford did not flinch, unloading on Trump as a bully and a “loser” before delivering the line heard loudest: “Your own people, President Trump, don’t even like you, and they’re going to speak loud and clear when it comes to the midterms.” That’s what this administration is working so hard to make us forget. Americans and Canadians are not strangers. We share family, history, towns, and lakes, and we have bled alongside one another. Canadians are not our enemy. Trans children are not our enemy. Teachers, immigrants, and our neighbors are not our enemy. Every time this regime points at another group and tells us to be afraid, the people dividing us are the ones we should be watching. Most of us already see through it, and we are exhausted by the daily performance of cruelty. We want to go back to being a country that does not have to worry about what its president might do to the people next door. And we can. The path back starts in November.
