Trump’s reflecting pool renovation failed, and a 3-time Olympian was arrested

While most Americans were asleep, the President of the United States was awake at 12:09 a.m., hiding inside Camp David, beginning a day-long spiral of bizarre posts. Instead of trying to salvage the collapsing Iran agreement, he spent his Saturday posting polls asking the public whether “Dumocrat” or “Dumbocrat” is the better insult, proposing to rename ICE to “NICE,” and attacking his critics. But the most revealing meltdown was about the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. After his rushed $14.7 million renovation turned green with algae, workers poured hydrogen peroxide into the water, which caused the new paint liner to peel away. Rather than admit the project failed, exactly as some experts had warned, Trump invented a vandalism conspiracy. He threatened “years in jail” for vandalism of a national monument.

One of the people arrested was David Hearn, a 67-year-old three-time Olympic canoeist who stopped during a bike ride, noticed a piece of liner already peeling and floating in the water, and reached in to feel it. He was handcuffed and detained for nearly five hours. “I’m a curious citizen,” he said. “I reached down to see what it felt like.” The chemicals Trump blamed on vandals were reportedly poured in by his own contractors. The “gash” he called sabotage was the liner separating after that chemical treatment. He is taking the visible consequences of his own failure and threatening citizens with prison for noticing it.

And the Reflecting Pool was not the only thing he broke this week. He torched his relationship with Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, one of his closest conservative allies, by claiming she “begged” him for a photo at the G7. She called it “completely fabricated” and said, “Italy and I do not beg,” before adding that it’s a shame he doesn’t show the same determination “with the enemies of the West” as he does with his own allies. Meanwhile, the Iran deal he signed three days ago was already falling apart, with the Strait of Hormuz declared closed again, while his vice president boarded a plane to clean up the mess. He can hit “post” all day and all night. But reality does not negotiate, it does not flatter, and it does not look away. The walls are closing in. And we are the ones who keep pushing on them.
